Michael Everson
Michael Everson (born January 9, 1963 in Norristown , Pennsylvania ) is an American and Irish linguist , typesetter , type designer and typographer , one of the co-authors of the Unicode standard and an expert on the world's typefaces .
Life
Everson was born in Norristown , Pennsylvania and moved to Tucson , Arizona at the age of 12 . His interest in the works of JRR Tolkien led him first to Old English and then to the other Germanic languages . He studied German , Spanish and French for his BA at the University of Arizona (1985) and History of Religions and Indo-European Linguistics for his MA at the University of California, Los Angeles (1988). He moved to Dublin in 1989 and was a Fulbright Fellow in the Faculty of Celtic Studies at University College Dublin (1991). He was naturalized as an Irish citizen in 2000 . In February 2018 he moved to Dundee , Scotland .

Everson is active in helping minority linguists , particularly in the areas of font standardization and internationalization . He is not only one of the co-authors of the Unicode standard, but also editor of ISO / IEC 10646 , registrar for ISO 15924 and sub-tag reviewer for RFC 3066 . He has contributed to the coding of many scripts and characters in these standards and received the Unicode Consortium 2000 Bulldog Award for technical contributions to the development and promotion of the Unicode standard. In 2004 Everson was named director of ISO TC46 / WG3 (Conversion of Written Languages), which is responsible for transcription standards .
Everson has been actively involved in coding many scripts in the Unicode and ISO / IEC 10646 standards, including Old Italian , Ethiopian , Balinese , Burmese , Braille , Buginese , Buid , Cherokee , Deseret , Georgian , Glagoliza , Gothic , Hanunó'o , Canadian Native scripts , cuneiform , Khmer , Coptic , Cypriot , Lepcha , Limbu , Linear B , Mongolian , New Tai Lue , N'Ko , Ogam , Ol Chiki , Osmanya , Persian cuneiform , Phoenician , Runes , Saurashtra , Shaw alphabet , Sinhala , Tagalog , Tagbanuwa , Tai Le , Thaana , Tibetan , Ugarit , Vai , and Yi , as well as many characters belonging to the Latin , Greek , Cyrillic and Arabic scripts.
Together with John Cowan he is also responsible for the ConScript Unicode Register . This is a project that aims to coordinate some artificial fonts in the Unicode area for private use. Among the "coded" scripts in the CSUR, the Shaw alphabet and Deseret were eventually formally incorporated into Unicode; two other constructed scriptures under consideration are Tengwar and Cirth .
Everson has also produced locale language information for many languages, from support for Irish and the other Celtic languages to the minority languages of Finland . In 2003 he was commissioned by the United Nations Development Program to prepare a report on the locale requirements for the main languages of Afghanistan ( Pashto , Dari and Uzbek ). Written with Roozbeh Pournader , the report was endorsed by the Ministry of Communications of the Afghan Islamic Interim Government. Recently, the UNESCO initiative B @ bel funded Everson's work to encode the N'Ko and Balinese scripts.
He also has a particular interest in typography and has set many books in Irish .

Michael Everson has published 295 books (as of December 2019) on a wide range of topics and in numerous languages for the Evertype publisher he founded since 2007.
