Emoji domain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With Emoji Domain pronunciation : [ emodʑi də (ʊ) meɪn ] (or emoticon domain , rare Smiley -Domain ), a domain with emoticons called, for example: www.?.tld.

function

For an emoji domain to work, it must be converted into a so-called punycode . Punycode is a character encoding method that can be used for IDN . You need this code when registering such a domain. It begins with the prefix xn-- and is usually followed by a four-digit code, for example xn--n28h.

Each emoji has a unique punycode, such as ? = xn--n28h. There are various generators on the Internet with which it is possible to convert emojis into Punycode.

Availability and registration

The availability of an emoji domain is limited. There are ( as of 2017 ) six top-level domains for which registration is possible. Country- specific .ws emoji domains can be registered with various providers.

Registering an emoji domain is not as easy as it is with a normal domain, as it is not possible to have such a domain registered with the registration office. To do this, it must first be converted into a Punycode. This domain can then be set up on the name server , whereby here too, attention must be paid to entering the Punycode.

When a visitor visits a website with an emoji domain, it is converted back into Punycode in the background. Currently, most browsers only contain the punycode xn--n28h.tldand not the emoji in the address entry fields. In the Google -Search already the Emoji will appear the domain.

history

On April 21, 2001, the first three domains with emojis were reserved. (♨️.com with xn--j6h.com, ♨️.net with xn--j6h.net and ☮️.com with xn--v4h.com) Cabel Sasser claims to have his emoji domain with him on April 13, 2011 http://xn--ls8h.la/ = ?.laregistered.

Problem

The biggest problem is that there are currently few providers that even support these domains. In addition, not all browsers support emoji domains. With Google Chrome , the emoji is coded in the Punycode and also shows this coding in the browser line. In Safari, the emoji remains visible in the browser line.

At present, only the Punycode coding is supported for e-mail domains, e.g. B. mail@xn–n28h.tld.

Available TLD

In addition to .ws , the TLDs .tk , .to , .ml , .ga , .cf , .gq and .fm are available. ( As of April 2018 )

Emoji subdomain

Emoji subdomains are like normal subdomains, except that they don't consist of letters and numbers, but of emojis. Emoji subdomains are possible with many popular TLDs . As with normal domains, these must first be converted into Punycode and can then be created like normal subdomains. This is how domain combinations such as ?.website.tld. This allows a lot of leeway for creating emoji subdomains. There are already providers who offer this.
