The company NTT Docomo Inc. ( Japanese 株式会社 NTT ド コ モ , Kabushiki-gaisha Enu Ti Ti Dokomo ), listed in the Nikkei 225 , is the largest wireless operator in Japan and a subsidiary of NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation) with over 53 million customers , which holds 63.32%. Headquarter is Tokyo .

history

The company was founded in 1992, has been selling analog mobile voice services since 1993, has been traded on the Tokyo stock exchange since 1998 and started its 3G service, which is comparable to UMTS, with FOMA in 2001 . With over 15 million customers, NTT Docomo is one of the largest providers of third-generation mobile services. Among other things, the company developed transparent touchscreens that allow smartphones to be controlled from both the front and the back. In addition, NTT Docomo offers an app for smartphones that simultaneously translates between Japanese and English during a phone call between two people. NTT Docomo launched its 4G service with LTE in December 2010 in Japan and worldwide.

Among other things, NTT Docomo has manufactured handheld PCs with the Windows CE operating system . These have built-in FOMA modules and various other high-tech features. These include, for example, the sigmarion II or the sigmarion III. The latter has only been sold in Japan and there only in the Japanese system language. However, there are developments to configure these devices 'in another language' using so-called MUI language packages. An English and a German-language package (see link) is currently known. In Germany, NTT Docomo became known as the inventor of i-mode .

Outside Japan, NTT Docomo has research laboratories in Palo Alto (since 1999), Beijing (since 2003) and the Docomo Euro-Labs in Munich-Laim (since 2000).

Since December 2009, NTT Docomo has held over 80% of the shares in the German mobile communications company Docomo Digital Germany .
