action
With Riley Andersen's birth, her emotion center is started at the same time. Joy, her first emotion, enters the control center and Riley smiles at her parents. The first reminder ball rolls into the control center and is saved. Shortly afterwards, however, grief emerges, whereupon Riley begins to cry.
From then on, Riley's childhood was shaped by five anthropomorphically represented basic emotions : joy (yellow), sorrow (blue), fear (purple), anger (red) and disgust (green). Under Freude's direction, they guide Riley through everyday life with the help of a control panel. Joy makes Riley happy, fear keeps her from harm and harm. Anger brings justice and disgust keeps Riley from getting sick. Only grief does not initially seem to have a real purpose and is therefore largely suppressed. Each memory ball glows in the color that corresponds to the underlying emotion. At the end of the day, they transport the balls into long-term memory via pneumatic tubes. Five central, yellow memory balls are kept in the control room. Each of these core memories creates an island of memories from which Riley's personality is composed: "Family", "Honesty", "Ice hockey", "Friendship" and "Making nonsense".
When Riley was eleven years old, she and her parents moved from their home in Minnesota to San Francisco . Since the moving van does not arrive on time, the family has to make provisions. Joy tries to make the tense situation a positive one, but on Riley's first day at the new school things get out of hand. While Riley is supposed to introduce himself, grief touches the current memory, whereupon it turns blue, so that Riley bursts into tears. A blue core memory emerges that wants to dispose of joy via the pneumatic tube; However, joy and sorrow along with all core memories are transported into the labyrinth of long-term memory.
Joy and sorrow have to be returned to the headquarters as quickly as possible, because Riley can now not feel the two emotions and since without the core memories, the personality islands not only stand still, but collapse when stimulated. On their journey they meet Bing Bong, Riley's fantasy friend from toddler days. He suggests taking the train of thought, as it also drives past the command center. When Riley falls asleep that evening, the train stops halfway. To get Riley to wake up, they head to the dream studios that are currently filming Riley's disastrous first day of school. They burst into the recording and cause a mess. Security forces arrest Bing Bong and bring him to the subconscious as a troublemaker. When he is freed, joy and sorrow lure the larger-than-life children's birthday clown Jangles into the film studio, causing Riley to have a nightmare and awaken from it.
In the command center, the remaining emotions advise on how to proceed. Three of the five personality islands have already crashed. Anger suggests running away and finding new positive experiences in Minnesota. He lets Riley implement the plan and thus shakes the last remaining personality islands, the family and the honesty island. When the latter crashes, it pulls the rails of the thought train with it, whereby joy, sorrow and bing bong land back in the long-term memory. Joy tries to return via pneumatic tube, but it is hit by parts of the collapsing island of honesty. Joy and bing bong fall into the abyss where forgotten memories are discarded, and there is no way up.
Joy recalls, however, that Bing Bong's rocket car was previously dumped. She manages to escape from the abyss with the help of the wagon, with Bing Bong sacrificing himself and finally disappearing from Riley's memory. Joy finds sorrow and they can finally return to the command center on the family island's trampoline. During the trip, Joy realized that one of sorrow's jobs is to strengthen bonds, so she leaves the control panel to her. So Riley, who is now on the bus to Minnesota, comes to an insight at the last moment. She runs home, where she tells her parents about her homesickness and is comforted as a result. The interplay of sorrow and joy creates a new core memory that is half yellow and half blue.
After the crisis has been overcome, the head office receives an expanded control panel. More complex personality islands have emerged that are driven by multi-colored core memories.
