action

Lightning McQueen is now a racing legend and an old hand in the racing business. But when a new generation of racing cars, first and foremost the newcomer Jackson Storm, threatened to drive him and his friends off the racetrack, he set himself the goal of winning the Piston Cup. In the last race of the season, Lightning tries to catch up with Jackson, but loses grip on his rear tire due to excessive speed and has an accident. Four months later, Lightning returns to his hometown of Radiator Springs. There he remembers the accident of his late mentor Doc Hudson. His girlfriend Sally and the others convince him to try again and he continues his racing career. There he learns that his team Rust-eze has been sold to Sterling. Lightning is teamed up with racing trainer Cruz Ramirez, who is supposed to help him win the Piston Cup. For this, McQueen tries a racing simulator , but gets into trouble and destroys the simulator.

Thereupon he gets into an argument with his boss Sterling. He persuades him to end his racing career and instead devote himself to promoting Rust-eze. However, Lightning refuses and explains to him that he will only consider retiring after the first race of the next Piston Cup season. Instead of upgrading his top speed to defeat Jackson Storm, Lightning is busy helping Cruz. He later takes part in an autocross race with Cruz , where he is covered in mud so as not to be shown to the spectators. Of course, Cruz wins the autocross race, while Lightning is overwhelmed by a wave of water that came out of an overturning truck. He's angry because he wasted more time and breaks Cruz's trophy. Then there is an argument between him and Cruz.

It turns out, however, that Cruz himself once had the dream of racing. Cruz then withdraws. Lightning asks Mack for help. This advises him to visit Smokey, Doc's former mentor. Lightning takes Cruz and travels with her to Doc's home in Thomasville, Georgia . There they meet Smokey and old friends of Doc. They learn that Doc has retired from racing since his accident in 1954 but was happy to coach McQueen. They are then taught methods that would help them defeat Jackson Storm. During a training race, McQueen remembers his mentor's accident and loses to Cruz. He thanks Smokey for his help and goes to Florida .

In the all-important race, Lightning starts a race to catch up. Lightning's entire crew is watching his race to catch up, and Cruz is also cheering him on. However, Sterling admonishes her to take care of her schedule and go to her next job. Then Cruz leaves the Florida 500. Lightning overhears the entire conversation over the pit radio and remembers Cruz's big dream of becoming a racing driver. In the next moment an accident happens on the track, whereupon Lightning pits and Cruz, who was brought back to the stadium by Smokey, encourages to drive the race to the end for him. Cruz initially looks insecure at the start of the race, but can then work his way back with the help of tips from Smokey and Lightning and fights for victory in the last laps against Jackson Storm. Storm tries to push Cruz against the wall on the final lap, which can break free and wins the race just before Storm. Sterling initially believes that it will bring Lightning into the advertising business for good; however, since Lightning and Cruz rode under the same starting number, victory applies to both.

Cruz then joins the Dinoco Racing Team, where she is now being trained by Lightning.
