Arlo & Spot (Original title: The Good Dinosaur ) is an American computer animation film from 2015 by Pixar , which premiered on November 10, 2015 in Paris . The film was released in German-speaking countries on November 26, 2015.

The meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago missed the earth. As a result, the dinosaurs and not humans prevail as intelligent species. A few million years later, the good-natured Apatosaurus Arlo is born as one of three children to a family of farmers. Unlike his brother and sister, who quickly get used to the local life and are soon allowed to perpetuate themselves with a footprint on the grain store as a tribute to their achievements, the slender and anxious Arlo still does not manage everyday life in the field even after years to dispute. His parents, though they love him, are concerned about him because of it; his brother Buck bullies him for his weaknesses. With the aim of getting him his print after all, Arlo's father Henry assigns him a seemingly simple task: he has set up a trap for a " pest " that steals your grain stores - if it gets caught in the associated net, it should Arlo beat him to death with a club. A little later, the plan seems to work, when the thief actually falls into the trap: it is a small human boy (who, since the species has never developed to its current civilization, looks more like a wild child ). When Arlo, out of a mixture of fear and pity, fails to kill the child and instead releases him, Henry gets angry and follows the trail of the "pest" with his son so that he can bring the matter to an end. After the two have had a long march and a storm is slowly brewing, Henry realizes that he has tackled his son, who is struggling a lot with the march, way too hard. When they want to turn back, however, the father is hit by a tidal wave and dies.
Without the help of their father, the family is overwhelmed with the work on the farm to the point of exhaustion and is under additional pressure to collect the harvest in time for the first snowfall. One day the human boy reappears and again uses the harvested grains of the dinosaurs. Arlo blames him for his father's death and runs after him, only to beat him to death after all, both of them being hit by the river like Henry before, whereby Arlo passes out - when he wakes up he finds himself far from home and stays stuck between rocks where it lingers at night. The next morning he is suddenly freed - as it turns out, the human boy loosened the stones and later brings him berries to strengthen him. Unlike Arlo, he finds it easy to get by in the wild so he can track down food for the dinosaur and defeat dangerous opponents like snakes. An unusual friendship develops between the two, which helps them endure all sorts of turbulent adventures as they try to get back home. A little later they meet a strange styracosaurus , who gathers various small animals that are supposed to protect him. He also wants the human boy with him and so he challenges Arlo to a competition: whoever manages to give the child a name that he or she listens to can keep it. When the Apatosaurus calls Spot after a few unsuccessful attempts , the boy listens - Arlo has won and has also found a name for his friend. The following night, due to a lack of common language, the two communicate with the help of branches and discover that they both share a similar fate, because Spot reveals that his parents have died.
A storm raged during the night and the entire area was devastated. Arlo encounters a sect-like group of nyctosaurs in the middle of the wilderness , led by Donnerknall (in the original Thunderclap ), while Spot stands in the background, out of sight. At first they look peaceful and, according to their own statements, are looking for survivors of the storm. When they actually find a small mammal, Donnerknall eats it immediately and it becomes apparent that they are not on a rescue mission, but on a prey hunt. Donnerknall, who now fluctuates in a psychotic way between a friendly mine and violent outbursts, recognizes the smell of Spot in Arlo, which he soon discovers. A chase ensues, but it comes to an end when two tyrannosaurs suddenly appear. Although Arlo is initially afraid of them, it soon turns out that they are well disposed towards him and Spot and only wanted to protect them from Thunderbolt and his group. The two T-Rexs and their father owned a herd of cattle , but some velociraptors stole it from them . With the help of spots with a keen sense of smell, they manage to locate the herd and win them back in a fight. Here Arlo shows great courage for the first time and can overcome his fear. The T-Rex family accompanies the two boys for a while until the mountains near which Arlo's family's farm is located can be seen.
On the way they see another person in the distance, but Arlo holds Spot back from going to him because he wants him to live with him on the farm. Another storm soon approaches and the nyctosaurs reappear under the leadership of Donnerknall, this time succeeding in taking Spot with them and pushing Arlo into a shrub of creepers. A vision of his father appears there, who frees his son and wants to take him home without a word. However, Arlo refuses to move on because it is more important to him to save Spot, whereupon the ghost of Henry is proud of his son and his newfound courage. Now Arlo wakes up, frees himself from the tendrils and follows the pterosaurs to the bank of a raging river. In a fight, it first succeeds in getting Thunderbolt's entourage into the current, where they drift downstream. Ultimately, Spot can bite a hole in the leader's wing, causing him to crash and end up in the river if he tries to fly away.
After the two successfully defied another tidal wave, they get closer and closer to the farm. Shortly before arrival, however, they hear the call of a person - it turns out that there is a large family of people living in the mountain landscape, who sniff the spot and approach him. Although the little human boy climbs up on Arlo's back to move on with him, the dinosaur sets him down again, knowing that it would be best for Spot to grow up among his own kind. He moves on himself and soon arrives at the farm again. After reuniting with his family, the last scene shows how Arlo, now strengthened and confident, is finally allowed to immortalize his footprint in the grain store.

The film won over 76 percent of the 204 Rotten Tomatoes critics . From the German Film and Media Review was Arlo & spot with the predicate of value provided. The reasoning states: “The viewer can hardly get enough of the landscapes, one wonders again and again whether it is really animated or not. Younger viewers in particular will succumb to the illusion here. ”However, the jury complained that the story lacks the above-average quality necessary for the highest rating and that it would have wished for a little more of the fantasy that so many Disney and Pixar films have excels. Frank Arnold from epd Film says: 'Arlo & Spot' has once again become a very child-friendly film that tells, in the tried and tested Disney manner, of a friendship between humans and animals, an outsider protagonist who can show what is in him over the course of the story plugged. However, Arnold complains: As impressive as 'Arlo & Spot' may be visually in its - almost photorealistic - landscape shots, it lacks an original story and differentiated protagonists.

The music for the film is Mychael and Jeff Danna's first and so far only collaboration with Pixar as composers. Walt Disney Records released the soundtrack with 30 tracks and a total running time of 63:22 min. on November 20, 2015.
