Soul is a computer-animated adventure cartoon from Pixar Animation Studios by Pete Docter , due to be released in 2020 on the Disney + streaming platform and in theaters.

Joe Gardner works as a music teacher in New York, but has always dreamed of playing on stage as a jazz musician. At an open casting in the Half Note Club, he wants to seize his chance and impress the other jazz musicians there. In an accident, however, Gardner's soul is separated from his body and transported to the “You Seminar,” a place where souls develop and passions develop before they are transported to a newborn child. Gardner has to work there with souls like 22, a soul with a dim view of life.

Beginning in 2016, it was announced that Pete Docter working on a new film for Pixar recently been above and Inside Out realized. Pixar announced the title of the film in June 2019. The film is supposed to deal with universal questions of the human species, such as where emotions, preferences and personal interests come from and what exactly it is that defines you.

Jamie Foxx speaks to the music teacher Joe Gardner, Phylicia Rashad lends her voice to his mother. Other speakers include Tina Fey as 22, Daveed Diggs as Joe's neighbor and Questlove , who has taken on the role of drummer.

The film music will be composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross , while Jon Batiste will write jazz pieces for the film.

A first trailer was presented at the beginning of November 2019. The film was originally scheduled to hit US cinemas on June 19, 2020 and German cinemas on October 1, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , however, the US launch date has been postponed to November 20, 2020. The cinema release in Germany is scheduled for November 26, 2020. At the beginning of June 2020 it was announced that Soul was among the four animated films in the "official selection", a selection of 56 films originally planned for the Cannes Film Festival in May 2020 , which have been canceled in their usual form due to the coronavirus pandemic.
