Tapani Niku (born April 1, 1895 in Haapavesi , † April 6, 1989 in Lahti ) was a Finnish cross-country skier .

Career

Niku, who started for Haapaveden NSU ta and Haapaveden Hiihtäjät and worked as a forester, won the Oulun Tervahiihto five times (1915, 1916, 1919, 1923, 1925). In 1916 he won his first medal at Finnish championships with the silver medal over 60 km. He repeated this placement in 1920 over 30 km. In addition, he was at Finnish championships four times champion over 30 km (1921, 1923, 1925, 1926), 10 km (1923-1926) and once over 60 km (1925). In 1920 and 1921 he won in Åre and in 1921 he took sixth place over 50 km at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival . The following year he ran at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival in second place over 50 km. At the first Lahti Ski Games in 1923, he won the 50 km run.

The following year Niku won the bronze medal over 18 km at the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix and won again at the Lahti Ski Games over 50 km. He also triumphed over 10 km at the Lahti Ski Games. At the Lahti Ski Games in 1925, he took second place over 10 km and first place over 50 km. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1926 , he came in 13th place over 30 km and sixth place over 50 km. He completed his last international race in 1926 at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival, which he finished in fifth place over 50 km.
