Daveed Daniele Diggs (born January 24, 1982 in Oakland , California ) is an American actor , rapper and songwriter . He is the front man of the experimental hip-hop trio clipping. For his dual role as the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in the Broadway - Musical Hamilton won him both a Tony and a Grammy Award . He also worked in several films and series.

Life

Daveed Diggs was born to a Jewish mother and an African American father in Oakland, California. His parents gave him a modification of the Hebrew given name David preferred by his father . Daveed's father made his living as a bus driver while his mother worked as a DJ and earned a Ph.D. in Social Welfare.

At school, Daveed felt like a social outcast until he discovered his talent for acting. He attended high school in Berkeley and moved from there to Brown University on the US east coast. Initially, the talented athlete dedicated himself to the hurdles , where he was able to achieve a best time of 14.21 seconds over the Olympic distance of 110 m . In 2004 he completed a theater degree with the title Bachelor of Arts . He then went back to Oakland, where he lived on unemployment benefits for a while and tried various auditions.

Diggs began his acting career in the experimental theater and worked as a performer and writer on Marc Bathumi Joseph's choreopoem Word Becomes Flesh . After several small stage roles in the Bay Area , Lin-Manuel Miranda invited him to audition for his musical Hamilton . Diggs was impressed by the contemporary processing of the historical content with hip-hop , R&B and jazz and took on a dual role as Marquis de Lafeyette and Thomas Jefferson . The musical was initially performed off-Broadway in 2015 and Diggs won a Lucille Lortel Award for Best Supporting Actor. That same year the production premiered on Broadway and received excellent reviews. In 2016, Diggs received a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for his double role and won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album as part of the cast . Because of these successes, he received honorary doctorates from Brown University in 2017, along with other prominent graduates .

After appearing in short films, Diggs starred in two episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2015 . He got his first recurring role in the television series The Get Down , which was canceled after a season. Since 2016 he plays the supporting role of Johan Johnson in the ABC - sitcom Black-ish . After leaving Hamilton , he began a career in the film business. 2017 he played in a HBO - mockumentary about doping in cycling before it in wonder at the side of Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson made his feature film debut. In the animated film Ferdinand - Gets STIERisch! he synchronizes the hedgehog Dos. The tragic comedy Blindspotting premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival , in which Diggs not only played his first leading role, but was also involved in the script and production.

In 2010 Diggs and his fellow actor Rafael Casal released their first mixtape, The BAY BOY Mixtape, with a total of eleven titles via Bandcamp . His first solo album Small Things to a Giant was released in early 2012, also self-published via Bandcamp.

Daveed Diggs has been rapper and songwriter for the experimental hip-hop trio clipping since 2010 . from Los Angeles . Together with his two befriended noise and musique concrète producers William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes, he released the mixtape midcity in 2013 , which brought the group international attention and a record deal with Sub Pop . Her label debut CLPPNG was released in 2014 and was praised for its unusual beats in the hip-hop genre. The follow-up work Splendor & Misery , an afrofuturistic - dystopian concept album , was nominated for a Hugo Award in 2016 as the first music album in over 40 years . The following year the band received a nomination for the prestigious science fiction award.

With another avant-garde group called True Neutral Crew, which describes their style of music as " Krautrap ", Diggs has released two EPs and a studio album , the latter on the independent label Deathbomb Arc. For the single Alexander Hamilton he received a silver record in the United Kingdom in April 2020 .
