Ferdinand - Go bullish! (Original title: Ferdinand ) is an American computer-animated comedy film released by Blue Sky Studios in 2017 . The film is based on the 1936 children's book Ferdinand, the Bull by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson . Compared to the book, the plot has been expanded to include many phrases and characters.

action

Ferdinand is a Spanish fighting bull who, unlike other animals of his kind, would rather smell flowers and enjoy his life than fight with toreros in an arena. However, when he is caught and that is exactly what is required of him, Ferdinand has to decide whether to reject his ideals or fight to regain his freedom.

At the beginning of the film Ferdinand lives with the other bulls Valiente, Guapo and Bones in the Casa del Toro farm of the owner Moreno. All other bulls mock Ferdinand for his peacefulness and love for flowers. They share the expectation that a good bull is one who prepares for the fight in the arena, in order to gain glory and honor there in case of victory. The latter also applies to Ferdinand's father, who proudly allows himself to be picked up for a bullfight. After he does not return, Ferdinand escapes from the farm and ends up on a flower farm, where he is adopted by the owner Juan (Juanes) and his daughter Nina and lives in friendly competition with the dog Paco.

Ferdinand grows up and retains his non-violent, flower-loving character, but grows to an impressive size. So he has to stay on the flower farm when Juan, Nina and Paco drive into town for the annual flower festival. Ferdinand follows them, is stung by a bee (a direct throwback to the book) and as a result unintentionally causes mischief in the city. He is caught by the men of the Casa del Toro and taken back there. Bones, Guapo and Valiente have also grown up, joined by a Scottish bull named Angus and an intimidating and wordless bull named Maquina. Ferdinand is still not respected by the bulls, but becomes friends with a goat named Elvira who, despite his lack of interest, wants to train him to fight bulls. He also gets to know three hedgehogs named Una, Dos, and Cuatro, who often come to the Casa del Toro.

One day, a legendary and extremely popular bullfighter named Ronaldo arrives at Casa del Toro to choose a bull for his final fight. On the first try, the bulls cannot impress him. Guapo is taken away, but not to the arena, but to a nearby slaughterhouse. The other cops tell Ferdinand that once Ronaldo chooses a bull to fight, it will be their fate. Although Ferdinand manages to earn the respect of the other bulls, with the exception of Valiente, they still believe that fighting is the only way for them to live. Ferdinand manages to persuade Elvira to return to Nina's farm with him. To escape, the hedgehogs show them a path that leads through the house. Shortly before they reach the exit and thus freedom, Ferdinand sees the picture of his father with his horns and dozens of other horns on a wall. Ferdinand realizes that the bull chosen to fight is being killed by the matador.

Ferdinand tells the other cops that they will still be killed after the fight. Valiente is the only one that is still not convincing. He attacks Ferdinand, whereupon Ferdinand accidentally knocks off his right horn in the fight. Ronaldo witnesses the scuffle and chooses Ferdinand for the fight after defeating Valiente. Valiente is brought to the slaughterhouse. Ferdinand gathers the remaining bulls to escape and goes to the slaughterhouse himself to free Valiente. He doesn't want to be freed at first, but Ferdinand appeals to his fighter nature, and they discover that Guapo is still alive. When Ferdinand tries to save Guapo, he accidentally activates a number of deadly devices, but with the help of the meanwhile retuned Valiente they escape the slaughterhouse. The bulls, Elvira and the hedgehogs flee from the training area in the company car. Moreno and his team are following them.

On a chase across the motorway and through Madrid, the animals are desperately trying to escape the people. They land at Madrid Atocha train station , from which Ferdinand wants to return to Nina. The bulls dock on an open railroad car on a train back to Nina's house, but Ferdinand sacrifices himself so that the others can get on the car and is captured by Moreno and his employees. Elvira stays with him. News of Ferdinand's impending fight with Ronaldo also reaches Nina via television, and she and Juan leave for Madrid.

In the bullfight in the arena, Ferdinand only evades the attacking Ronaldo, but so quickly that the normal roles (attacking bull, evasive torero) are completely reversed. Ferdinand even accidentally catapults Ronaldo into the bullpen. The torero furiously tries to attack Ferdinand with two banderillas , but Ferdinand refuses the final confrontation. When Ronaldo takes a fatal blow, the crowd whistles him and takes a committed stand for Ferdinand. Ronaldo renounces killing him and withdraws with dignity. At the end of the fight, Nina has also arrived at the arena, and the two are reunited. The other bulls have also arrived to stand by Ferdinand, but can only get to his victory, which he has just managed to achieve alone and pacifistically.

In the end Ferdinand and Nina return home, and the other bulls, the hedgehog and Elvira, move with them to the farm. The film ends with the animals watching the sun set over a field of flowers.

In a short scene in the credits, the hedgehogs meet their brother Tres, who was believed to be dead.
