Gina Alexis Rodriguez (born July 30, 1984 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American actress . She gained fame through the role of Jane Villanueva in the television series Jane the Virgin , for which she was awarded the Golden Globe , among other things .

life and career

Gina Rodriguez was born in Chicago , Illinois , in July 1984, the third daughter of Puerto Rican parents. Her father is the boxing referee Genaro Rodriguez. From the age of 7 to 17 she was a member of the salsa dance group "Fantasia Juvenil". She attended New York University Tisch School of the Arts . She also trained at the Atlantic Theater Company and Experimental Theater.

Rodriguez began her career with minor roles in various television series. She had her first film role in the MTV horror film My Super Psycho Sweet 16 2 . In October 2011, she received the supporting role of Beverly in the CBS - soap opera Bold and the Beautiful . She applied for a lead role in Devious Maids , but was not cast.

Rodriguez has played the leading role of Jane Villanueva in the CW - Dramedy Jane the Virgin since October 2014 . For this she received the Golden Globe Award in 2015 in the category Best Series Lead Actress - Comedy or Musical . She speaks the title character in the animated series Carmen Sandiego , the first season of which was released in January 2019 by the streaming service Netflix . She also directed three episodes of Jane the Virgin and Witch Perfect from the television series Charmed , the remake of Charmed .

In 2018, she played Anya Thorensen in the movie Extinction alongside Natalie Portman (Lena).

In the same year she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

She is committed to the representation of women and especially Latin American women in the film industry.
