At the 2017 Academy Awards , Deepwater Horizon received two nominations.

action

Mike Williams is the chief electrician of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig , where he makes a living for his family maintaining the electrical equipment. His little daughter has only a vague idea of what her father is doing there, but knows that his work is dangerous and can also describe it from her naive point of view in simple words and even with the help of everyday objects such as a Coke can, honey and a pen, demonstrate.

There is a good working atmosphere on the drilling rig. The mood of the crew is only clouded every now and then by the bigwigs from BP who want to put pressure on the workers because they are 43 days behind schedule. Jimmy Harrell, the head of Deepwater Horizon , does not want to forego the necessary tests in order not to endanger the safety of the workers. Despite all the precautionary measures, after a sloppily conducted test by order, in which incorrect data was displayed on the computer screens, on April 20, 2010, on the platform, which is 40 miles southeast of the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico , one comes Explosion, and soon it burns brightly. In addition, the entire system is flooded with sludge, and gases also escape and enter the air shafts, where they set off a chain reaction. The crew must try to survive until the rescue workers arrive. Large parts of the platform are in flames, and it shows how dangerous the work really is for Mike Williams and the life and limb of the crew and how much the leaking oil threatens to become a danger to the ocean. Mike tries to get as many employees off the rig safely as possible. While 115 Deepwater Horizon workers were saved, 11 people lost their lives in the disaster. The final scene shows pictures of the 11 deceased workers.

background

The burning Deepwater Horizon on April 20, 2010

The film largely depicts the true events of April 20, 2010, when, as a result of serious neglect, a blowout occurred on the Deepwater Horizon oil platform , which started a fire, killing 11 workers and sinking the platform two days later. Oil spills led to the worst environmental disaster of its kind in history, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill . Mike Williams, the Deepwater Horizon's chief technician trying to keep systems running on the burning rig, was one of the last to leave. Caleb Holloway, Dewey Revette, Wyman Wheeler, Jason Anderson and bridge officer Andrea Fleytas were also among the last members of the Deepwater Horizon's real crew before it exploded.

After explosions occurred on the Deepwater Horizon , a rescue operation was carried out by the United States Coast Guard . The CG Pompano was the first to arrive at the scene of the accident. Captain Joseph Paradis was the commanding officer of the Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit and Mary Landry served as Federal on Scene Coordinator during the disaster. At the end of the large-scale rescue operation, Williams was on the platform's helipad. To save himself, he ran and jumped in a high arc into the sea. Williams became the face of the disaster as a result of the following investigation and media coverage.

Later, a working group with representatives from various US authorities investigated whether criminal behavior contributed to the disaster. BP , the operator of the platform, did not comment directly on the allegations against former employees. Williams had already expressed concerns about the safety devices in the run-up to the disaster and later testified before a committee of inquiry in the state of Louisiana that the alarm on the oil rig had been switched off, which his superiors had also known. Curt Kuchta, the captain of the Deepwater Horizon , had insufficiently prepared the crew of the oil platform for such situations and was not qualified as a manager.

reception

Age rating

In Germany, the film received the age rating FSK 12 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “With the focus on an engineer heroically advocating the survival of his colleagues, the previous history is examined first, followed by the course of the disaster in the action-packed and exciting second half. Individual, drastic depictions can emotionally overwhelm children under the age of 12, but even 12-year-olds are able to classify these scenes in the context and genre of the disaster film that is characterized as historical . "

Reviews

The film was able to convince 83 percent of the critics of Rotten Tomatoes (of 253 critics in total, as of February 16, 2020). By consensus it says: "Deepwater Horizon uses effectively the catastrophe described in its title, man-to an unusually serious and yet reasonably exciting action - thriller deliver."

Kai Mihm from epd Film describes the film as a homage to the real role models of the film characters, with a harmonious balance between dignity and pathos, and even if he follows the tradition of classic disaster films, Berg shows his special class when he sees scenes of explosions and collapses show that are of breathtaking intensity, but without luridly exploiting the chaos. In addition, the script also casually incorporates a large amount of technical information into the film that is necessary to understand the disaster.

Thomas Grüter from Spektrum der Wissenschaft thinks that director Peter Berg also captures the human component of the accident very well, describes the hard life on board an oil rig and takes time to introduce the function of its components and the tasks of the crew: “Meticulously monitored he the initially small, but then avalanche-like increasing deviations from normality. When those responsible finally understand that the disaster is inevitable and can only be limited, they are taking their decisions too slowly. They cling to familiar processes and only initiate emergency procedures when they can no longer take effect. ”Instead of accusing the platform's occupation, Grüter continues, the film only shows their all too human failure and that the film dramatizes these events, Without exaggerating, his great strength is: “He does not analyze the structural problems of the business with the oil in the run-up to the disaster, nor the failure of BP to contain the oil spill. But it makes it clear to more people than any documentation how careless it is to loosen the regulations again. "

Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter recognized potential Oscar nominees in film and director and a possible Best Actor in Mark Wahlberg ahead of the premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival . In his opinion, the film editing and a number of other technical works in the film are also Oscar-worthy. In December 2016, it was announced that the film had been shortlisted for the Best Visual Effects category at the 2017 Academy Awards .

Gross profit

The cost of producing the film of around US $ 110 million is offset by global revenues of around US $ 121 million. The film recorded 124,713 viewers in German cinemas.
