Gary Clark Jr. (born February 15, 1984 ) is an American musician and actor . He lives in Austin , Texas, USA .

According to his own statement, influenced by blues , jazz , soul , country and hip-hop , the distorted guitar sound is a defining characteristic of his music.

Career

Musical career

Clark started playing the guitar at the age of 12. In his youth he gave small concerts in his hometown of Austin. There he met Clifford Antone - the owner of the Antone's music club - who introduced him to Jimmie Vaughan , among others . He and other musicians from the Austin music scene accompanied Clark through his career. Clark first received major attention when he played at the 2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival alongside BB King , Eric Clapton , Buddy Guy , Steve Winwood , John Mayer , Sheryl Crow , Jeff Beck and ZZ Top . In June 2011 and 2012, Clark performed at the annual Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee.

Gary Clark took on vocals on the bonus track " I Want You Back ", originally from the Jackson Five , on Sheryl Crow's album 100 Miles from Memphis .

In February 2012, he performed at the Red, White and Blues event at the White House. On December 15, 2012, Clark made a guest appearance at the final concert of the Rolling Stones anniversary tour in New Jersey and played the song Goin 'Down by Freddie King with the Stones and John Mayer .

Clark achieved his international breakthrough in 2013 with his album Blak and Blu . Already in October 2012 it was his biggest success in the USA and reached number 6 in the US album charts and number 1 among blues albums. The following year it was released worldwide and hit the charts in many other countries. The song Please Come Home was particularly successful , for which it was awarded a Grammy in the field of traditional blues. With Ain't Messin '' Round he was also one of the nominees in the category of best rock song.

On February 11, 2015, he performed with Beyoncé Knowles and Ed Sheeran on the Stevie Wonder Tribute .

On the occasion of the Grammy Awards 2020 , a tribute concert for Prince took place on January 28, 2020 in the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles under the motto "Let's Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince", at which Clark the Prince songs Let's Go Crazy and The Cross sang. The concert aired on U.S. television on April 21, 2020, the fourth anniversary of Prince's death.

Film career

In 2007, Clark played the role of Sonny in the movie Honeydripper .

Press and media

Jambase describes it as the future of Texas blues . The American Rolling Stone declared Clark the Best Young Gun in its Best of Rock edition in April 2011 .

Awards

Clark received numerous prizes and awards, in 2013 he received a Grammy Award and the Austin Music Award for best blues and electric guitarist. Likewise, May 3, 2001 was proclaimed Gary Clark Jr. Day by the Mayor of Austin. In 2015, his album was Live Blues Album of the Year and he himself was in a tie with Buddy Guy Blues Artist of the Year in the Down Beat Critic Polls. The album This Land with the title song of the same name brought him three more Grammy Awards in 2020 .
