Freddie King
Freddie King (born September 3, 1934 in Gilmer , Texas , † December 28, 1976 in Dallas , Texas) was a blues musician and one of the "three kings of the electric blues", next to Albert King and BB King . His style influenced u. a. Eric Clapton , Mick Taylor , Stevie Ray Vaughan and Lonnie Mack . He was also one of the first blues musicians to play with a black and white band.
life and work
Freddie King was born as Frederick Christian and received his first guitar lessons from his mother and uncle. He originally played rural acoustic blues in the footsteps of Lightnin 'Hopkins , but as a teenager he was drawn to the rougher Chicago blues. Moving to Chicago with his family in 1950 , he soon formed his own band, The Every Hour Blues Boys, and later played with bands from Little Sonny Cooper and Hound Dog Taylor . Presumably through the influence of Hound Dog Taylor, Freddie King developed his rough blues style on the electric guitar during this period.
In 1960, Freddie King recorded the blues songs, which later became his commercial successes. This includes both instrumental pieces such as The Stumble , which Peter Green impressively arranged on the John Mayall production A Hard Road , and San-Ho-Zay , but also sung blues titles such as Have You Ever Loved a Woman and I'm Tore Down , which was later taken over by Eric Clapton and is presented repeatedly during blues periods (From the Cradle) . With this, King opened up his music to the rock audience. Freddie King's standards also include the signature hideaway , an instrumental piece arranged by Eric Clapton (most recently at John Mayall's 70th birthday concert in Liverpool) and by Johnny Winter in the Live in NYC '97 production . The piece was named after one of the hippest bars in Chicago. In the 1960s the piece was part of the compulsory repertoire of every blues and blues rock band.
After further recordings in 1964, King became quieter. It was not until the beginning of 1970 that he recorded titles such as Going Down Slow and Me and my Guitar under the direction of Leon Russell . At the height of his international success, he suffered a heart attack during a concert in December 1976, from which he died shortly afterwards.
