Leon Russell (born Claude Russell Bridges on April 2, 1942 in Lawton , † November 13, 2016 in Nashville ) was an American singer, songwriter , pianist and guitarist . As a studio musician, Russell played with very different artists and bands such as Jerry Lee Lewis , Phil Spector and the Rolling Stones . His solo career spanned the genres of rock , blues , country and gospel .

Life

Russell began his musical career at age 14 performing with Ronnie Hawkins and Jerry Lee Lewis in Tulsa , Oklahoma . Two years later he studied guitar in Los Angeles with James Burton and played with Glen Campbell , among others .

As a member of Phil Spector's studio group , Russell was involved in the hits of many stars of the 1960s, including the Byrds , Gary Lewis & the Playboys and Herb Alpert . In 1967 he built his own studio and produced his first solo album Look Inside the Asylum Choir . He wrote the hit Delta Lady (1969) for Joe Cocker and organized his tour Mad Dogs & Englishmen . Shortly afterwards his second solo album Leon Russell appeared with the hit A Song for You , which was covered by the Carpenters , Ray Charles , Simply Red , Michael Bublé (feat. Chris Botti ) and Richie Sambora , among others .

In 1971 Russell performed at the concert for Bangladesh organized by George Harrison . He had previously recorded with BB King , Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan . His solo album Carney reached number 2 on the American charts . 1975 married Russell Mary McCreary, previously in the vocal group Little Sister of Sly & the Family Stone had participated. The two worked together on different albums. Since 1979 Russell worked on various projects with Willie Nelson . Russell then brought out other albums, most recently with his daughters Tina Rose and Sugaree Noel.

In November 2009 Russell began writing songs with Elton John and Bernie Taupin for the album The Union with John, which was released on October 22, 2010. In 2011 Russell was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (category "Sidemen", Keyboard). From July 24, 2011 Leon Russell was the opening act for Bob Dylan's concerts in the USA. In September 2015, at the Lockn 'Festival in Arrington, Virginia , he played a concert of pieces from the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour in memory of Joe Cocker with the Tedeschi Trucks Band , Chris Stainton , Rita Coolidge and other musicians from the tour band at the time. Russell died in Nashville on November 13, 2016 at the age of 74.
