Bernard John "Bernie" Taupin (born May 22, 1950 in Anwick , Lincolnshire ) is an English poet , songwriter and painter who is best known for his collaboration with Elton John . Taupin wrote a. a. the lyrics to Elton John's hit Candle in the Wind , the world's best-selling single.

Life

Taupin, son of a British farmer, discovered his lyric skills at an early age. In 1967 he applied for an ad in the New Musical Express in which a composer was looking for a lyricist. Behind the composer was Reginald Kenneth Dwight, better known as Elton John. John and Taupin began writing lyrics for Dick James' music . Initially, both wrote titles for other musicians, but without success. The decoupled singles failed. The John / Taupin song I've Been Lovin You too Long , which was intended for England's participation in the Eurovision de la Chanson Grand Prix , also failed in the preliminary round.

A year later, John and Taupin wrote the first Elton John album entitled Empty Sky . Despite good criticism, the album sold poorly. It wasn't until 1970 that John and Taupin made their breakthrough with their first hit together, Your Song . In 1976 Taupin and Elton John ended their partnership and only found each other again over the next decade. About the early phase of their collaboration, Taupin published a book in 1976 called The One Who Writes the Words for Elton John ( ISBN 0224012363 ). In 1978 he wrote the album "From the Inside" with Alice Cooper

In 2005 he wrote the song What I Really Want for Christmas with Brian Wilson , the title track for the album of the same name, released in October 2005.

The title A Love That Will Never Grow Old from the soundtrack to the film Brokeback Mountain was written by Gustavo Santaolalla with Bernie Taupin and sung by Emmylou Harris . The song won a Golden Globe and a Satellite Award , and the entire soundtrack received an Oscar .

At the 2020 Academy Awards , he and Elton John received the Oscar in the Best Movie Song category for " (I'm Gonna) Love Me Again " from Rocketman .

At the end of June 2020, Bernie Taupin became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .

Bernie Taupin lives on a ranch in Southern California and is dedicated to painting.

In 2015, the Rolling Stone listed Taupin together with Elton John on rank 48 of the 100 best songwriters of all time .
