Very Bad Things is a 1998 comedy film directed by Peter Berg . His directorial debut deals cynically with the aftermath of a failed bachelorette party held by five close friends in Las Vegas.

action

Kyle Fisher celebrates his bachelor party with friends Charles, Robert, Michael and Adam in a hotel room in Las Vegas with loud music, drugs and a prostitute booked by Robert. When Michael retires to the bathroom with the prostitute, there is a momentous accident in which he impales her head on a towel rail.

Robert, who is the only one to keep a calm head in the panic, convinces the rest of the group not to call the police and just bury the body in the desert. The accident threatens to be exposed when a security guard of the hotel accidentally discovers the prostitute's body. In order to cover up their killing, Robert then murdered him.

Under Robert's instructions, the friends now dismantle the two bodies, bury them in the Nevada desert and return home. Adam is the first to be plagued by his guilty conscience. On the bachelorette party , he starts an argument with his brother Michael. The latter then injured him very badly when, full of anger, he rammed Adam's mini-van with his car. Adam dies in the hospital after he was able to whisper something to his wife Lois.

Robert now fears that Adam told his wife Lois while she was dying what happened in Las Vegas. After Lois implies that Adam left some kind of written confession, Robert kills both Lois and Michael, making it look like an affair.

Now Kyle can't take it anymore either - he tells his future wife Laura about the events in Vegas. To make matters worse, the two now have to take care of Lois and Adam's children, but in return inherit the deceased couple's assets, which, however, are initially estimated at 1,000,000 US dollars as a result of deductions, inflation and missed payment a rate reduced by Adams life insurance to $ 14,223.

Shortly before the wedding between Kyle and Laura, Robert tries to blackmail Kyle and demands the supposed inheritance. He is seriously injured by Laura and later accidentally killed by Charles. After the wedding, she sends her husband into the desert to bury Robert's body there and also to murder Charles, the only living witness.

Once in the desert, Kyle doesn't have the heart to kill his friend. On the way home, however, the two have a serious car accident. Kyle loses both legs and Charles becomes paraplegic. And so Laura now has to take care of these two and the two children of Adam and Lois, as a result of which she suffers a nervous breakdown.

Reviews

“The bloody mixture of Pulp Fiction , Swingers and Crazy About Mary leaves viewers with bipolar feelings. Either you cheer Berg's unwillingness to choose a genre and laugh at the maddened cynicism. Or at some point you don't want to follow the bitter fun anymore and get out piqued. The latter decision, of course, spoils the enjoyment of the fine basic idea and the crazy play of the well-humored actors. This illustrious group of then only 'known' stars [...] alone is worth their entry fee. [...] Director Peter Berg has also made a career leap since then. [...] His Very Bad Things doesn't manage to keep the focus on his pitch-black humor, because Berg recently pays tribute to the bloody public taste. Nevertheless, the changeable murderous comedy is more entertaining than many a modern, high-speed parade who dares to go to the cinemas at the same time. "

“The attempt at a pitch-black satire on the 'American way of life' fails because of the cynicism of the original and the bloody details that quickly push the black humor into the background. Even the handsome ensemble of actors cannot save the film. "

“The biting satire offers a potpourri of everything that one can love about deep black humor and should also for full cinematic enjoyment. In addition, it presents a good-humored (and bitterly angry) Christian Slater, as well as a fresh Cameron Diaz, who once again proves that hardly anyone can hold a candle to (Hollywood) water when it comes to comedic talent.
