Spenser Confidential is an American action movie by Peter Berg from the year 2020 . The film, produced by Netflix , is loosely based on the novel Wonderland by Ace Atkins, which continued Robert B. Parker's crime series about the private detective Spenser.

action

Former policeman Spenser has just been released from prison. He was imprisoned there five years after beating up a superior, Captain Boylan, who on the one hand did not pursue one hot lead, and on the other because of domestic violence. He finds accommodation with his old boxing mentor, Henry, who lets him live with the aspiring MMA fighter Hawk. Spenser tries to get his life back on track and goes to a truck driving school and stays away from his aggressive ex-girlfriend Cissy.

Captain Boylan is murdered the same night he is released. Somebody tries to blame the police officer Terrance for the murder, who is also found dead. His murder was staged as a suicide. Spenser can't watch it and begins investigating with Hawk.

Spenser uncovers a huge plot involving a drug cartel and the police. Particularly bitter: of all people, his ex-partner, the only one who visited him from his colleagues in jail, seems to be the mastermind behind it all. It's about building a casino, Wonderland, which is to be financed with drug money. Finally, Spenser manages to get the cartel's last drug delivery and sets a trap for his ex-partner. In the end he succeeds in handing his ex-partner over to the FBI.

Reviews

Sidney Schering from Filmstarts awarded the film three stars. The action didn't convince him that much, but described the two protagonists as “a sympathetic duo in the best buddy movie tradition”, the film itself as “neatly staged” and “quickly told”.

Pascal Reis also rated the film as solid. His conclusion: "Certainly not great art, but as a competently arranged genre cinema, with the local patriotism interspersed as expected, the film and the duo responsible for it knows how to please."

Alice Kuropka also described the film as "solid entertainment" in her review for FAZ.net . She also criticizes “the mostly short action scenes” as “not really original”.

Benjamin Lee, on the other hand, only gave one of five stars on the website of the British weekly newspaper The Guardian . He described the film as "soulless" and "cheap", the film would lack everything that other buddy films have: "humor, style, energy, life".

On The New York Times website , Elisabeth Vincentelli said the film was nice to watch, but easy to forget.
