Marc Maron (born September 27, 1963 ) is an American comedian , podcaster , writer , actor , musician, and director . He has appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman several times and made over forty appearances on the Late Night with Conan O'Brien show , more than any other guest.

Since September 2009 he has been producing and moderating his own podcast, WTF with Marc Maron , which appears twice a week and which consistently reaches top positions in the iTunes download charts. From 2013 to 2016 Marc Maron played himself in the comedy series Maron , of which he is the creator. Since 2017 he has played the role of Sam Sylvia in the Netflix series GLOW .

Life

Marc Maron was born in New Jersey . His parents are surgeon Barry Maron and realtor Toby Maron. Other stages of his childhood were Alaska and Albuquerque ( New Mexico ). He attended Highland High School and Boston University , which he graduated from with a degree in English literature. He loves cats and speaks openly about his previous alcohol and drug addiction, which he defeated in August 1999, both on his show and on stage and in interviews. He was married twice and had relationships with Moon Zappa and Lynn Shelton .

Marc Maron began his stand-up career in Los Angeles at the age of 24. Since then he has appeared regularly in many comedy clubs across the United States and on television. Among other things, he replaced Jon Stewart as moderator of the Short Attention Span Theater . On stage he often addresses his own life as well as very private topics and often falls back on his talent for improvisation. In 2000 he had a minor supporting role in Cameron Crowe's film Almost Famous and in 2015 he appeared in Sharknado 3 . He had a number of guest appearances both in the show Louie , which is produced by his good friend Louis CK himself , and in the series Girls . He also moderated several political radio programs, including for Air America . In 2017 he took on a leading role in the series GLOW . In 2019 he appeared in a supporting role in Joker .

WTF podcast

Air America laid off Marc Maron and a few other employees in 2009 and had to file for bankruptcy and cease operations shortly thereafter, but failed to collect the employees' keys. Marc Maron used his key to secretly record the first few issues of his podcast at night in his old office. WTF is not only one of the very first podcasts, but is now one of the most successful and most listened to podcasts according to iTunes. Each issue begins with a short monologue on a wide variety of topics, followed by a very detailed and usually very amusing and personal interview with a prominent personality - mostly comedians, actors, musicians or authors. On average, the podcast reached over 200,000 downloads per episode and on December 9, 2013 the total was 100,000,000. Download listed. In 2014, Rolling Stone named WTF the best comedy podcast ever. After about 20 issues, Marc Maron began recording the podcasts in the garage of his Los Angeles home . The first guests were mostly friends from the comedy scene. In the meantime, many prominent and world-famous personalities have been guests in Marc Maron's garage, including President Barack Obama in June 2015.

In May 2012, WTF was named Best Comedy Podcast by Comedy Central . In December 2014, Slate named the interview with Louis CK the best podcast of all time.
