Lynn Shelton (born August 27, 1965 in Oberlin , Ohio - † May 16, 2020 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film and television director , screenwriter , film editor , film producer and actress .

Life

Lynn Shelton was born in Ohio in 1965 as one of four children of Wendy and David "Mac" Shelton, but grew up in Seattle . In 1989 she moved to New York City to her boyfriend, the former MTV presenter Kevin Seal . She completed her studies in Photo, Video and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts in 1995 with a Master of Fine Arts . In the late 1990s, Shelton and Kevin Seal moved back to Seattle, where their son was born shortly thereafter.

In Seattle, Shelton was initially primarily active as a film editor . In 2003 she attended a screening of the French film Vendredi soir at a film forum in the presence of the director Claire Denis . Denis reported on her experiences with her first film Chocolat - Verbotene Sehnsucht , which confirmed Shelton in her decision to pursue a career as a film director even at the age of 37.

In 2006 she made her directorial debut with the film drama We Go Way Back , for which she also wrote the script. In 2008 the comedies What the Funny and My Effortless Brilliance were created . She became known to a wider audience with the comedy drama Humpday , which won the Special Jury Prize for Spirit of Independence at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and was also shown at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival in the side series Quinzaine des réalisateurs .

Shelton then took over the direction of various television episodes of series such as Mad Men , Ben and Kate , New Girl , The Mindy Project , Master of None , Fresh Off the Boat , Shameless and Casual .

Grow Up !? - I will grow up later , based on a script by Andrea Seigel . Shelton shot several episodes of the series Love and GLOW for Netflix .

Lynn Shelton lived in Seattle. Her marriage to Kevin Seal produced a son. Most recently she was in a relationship with comedian Marc Maron , with whom she worked on GLOW . She died of a blood disease at the age of 54 .
