The dramedy format produced by John Wells and Paul Abbott is an adaptation of the British drama series of the same name . In the German-speaking area, the pay TV broadcaster FOX has been broadcasting the series since January 23, 2012. In January 2020, the series was extended by a final eleventh season.

action

The dramedy series Shameless deals with the daily life of the dysfunctional Gallagher family from Chicago . She belongs to the urban lower class and lives in a modest single-family house on the South Side , a socially deprived area of the US metropolis.

The head of the family is the unemployed and irresponsible alcoholic Frank, who was abandoned by his bipolar wife. He shows very little interest in his six children and instead of making a living together, he spends most of the time in his favorite bar ( The Alibi Room ). The family lacks a regular income, as Frank prefers to invest social benefits in his alcohol and drug consumption . Left to herself, his eldest daughter Fiona tries to organize the mostly chaotic family life and has inevitably taken over the mother role for her siblings. The highly intelligent but petty criminal Lip prefers to live the day ahead rather than strive for good school grades. Ian hides his homosexuality from those around him and suffers from his hidden feelings. Debbie is a caring girl, but she also regularly reaches the limits of her resilience. Ten-year-old Carl, on the other hand, compensates for a lack of structure in life with violence, and finally there is little baby Liam. Together the children try to cope with their life on the edge of society in a creative, scandalous, but also warm-hearted way, despite their impossible father. They receive support from their neighbors, Fiona's best friend Veronica Fisher and her partner, the bartender Kevin Ball.

Characters

Francis "Frank" Gallagher

Frank is the father of six Gallagher children. He has no job, is heavily addicted to alcohol, consumes harder drugs more often and misuses medication. Although he often self-righteously praises himself as a good father and an exemplary taxpayer, he does not miss any opportunity to deceive and steal from the state, his family and everyone else around him. As a result, he not only earned himself a very bad reputation in the neighborhood, but also regularly comes into conflict with the state, the mafia and gangs. He often receives reluctant help from his children, whom he either involves in his machinations or who want to avoid being taken into state care by the youth welfare office.

Most of the time he doesn't live with his children, but lives with women whom he exploits financially. For example, he benefits from the fact that Sheila Jackson cannot leave her house because of agoraphobia and so does not know his bad reputation. He plays love for his hosts, but feels it only for his wife Monica, who left him two years earlier.

He is not very interested in the lives of his children, but takes their successes into account. He explains their neglect as a style of upbringing, with which he pursues the goal of making them more independent people. While the relationship of the three older children towards him is marked by disrespect and sometimes even contempt, at least at times he has a better relationship with Debbie and Carl.

Fiona Monica Gallagher

Fiona is the oldest daughter and has taken on the role of mother to her siblings. Since she had to look after the family at an early age, she has no school leaving certificate and is dependent on odd jobs to support the family. She receives support from her best friend and neighbor Veronica, who lends her equipment and sometimes takes care of Liam.

At a party she meets the charismatic Steve (Jimmy), with whom she gets involved in a one-night stand and later in a relationship. The relationship between the two is often weighed down by Steve's lies and the effects of his criminal activities.

Her relationship with her siblings is very good, but she has little authority over them : instructions that do not suit them are - if at all - carried out by them reluctantly. Especially with her eldest brother Lip, she gets into disputes over questions about family financing and his education. She accuses her father of leaving her alone with the upbringing of the children and behaves disrespectfully towards him, and after particularly serious missteps on his part, openly hostile. Nevertheless, she often helps him with his problems, especially out of fear that the youth welfare office might take her siblings away from her. She is disappointed with her mother Monica because she has left her alone with Frank.

Phillip Ronan "Lip" Gallagher

Phillip, known as Lip, is the second oldest child of the Gallaghers. He is exceptionally smart, gives tutoring and takes other students' university entrance tests for a fee. However, he too often behaves irresponsibly: He drinks alcohol, takes soft drugs and has unprotected sex . He sells drugs and thefts both to support the family and for personal reasons. As a result, he already has a petty criminal criminal record . His friends and family urge him to quit school and go to university ; but he is not enthusiastic about this idea himself.

He falls in love with Karen Jackson, whom he initially tutor, and begins an open relationship with her . Since she is very promiscuous , she breaks his heart several times and he meets Mandy Milkovich. This supports him better with regard to his future, but is very unscrupulous about it. For this reason he later separates from her. He then goes to college and occasionally commutes between his dorm room and the room at home.

The relationship between Lip and his siblings is usually good. Fiona grants him a lot of freedom, so he only clashes with her when it comes to planning his future or when she puts her interests above those of the family. He's the first to find out that his brother Ian is gay . At first he has little understanding for this, but quickly accepts this fact and supports his brother.

Ian Clayton Gallagher

Ian is the third oldest child in the family. His goal is to become an officer in the U.S. Forces and is a member of the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC). At the beginning of season one, he comes out gay to Lip and has an affair with the kiosk owner he works for after school. Unlike his father and older brother, he tries to restrain himself from criminal acts so as not to endanger his military career. Although he has a good relationship with Lip, he often gets into arguments with him. Lip believes Ian shouldn't join the military because he'll unnecessarily risk his life there, while Ian disapproves of Lip's relationship with Karen.

He developed a good friendship with Mandy Milkovich. After Lip, she is the second person to whom he tells about his homosexuality. He later begins a sexual relationship with her brother Mickey, which develops into a love affair. This is overshadowed by the fact that Mickey is initially hiding his sexual inclinations from others and especially from his homophobic father.

Ian has had bipolar disorder since season four , but can contain the disease with medication and is training to be a paramedic. He later became involved in the LGBT movement.

In the course of a genetic test, it is determined that Frank is not Ian's biological father, but his uncle.

Deborah Jean "Debbie" Gallagher

Debbie is the fourth child and the second oldest daughter. She suffers greatly from lagging behind her peers in physical development. She tries to support the family financially whenever possible and offers day care for small children during the summer . She is initially a minor, grows up as the series progresses, and has a daughter named Franny, whom she is raising alone.

She is the good soul in the family and initially loves her father despite his antics.

Carl Francis Hashish Gallagher

Carl is the fifth child and the third son after Lip and Ian, with whom he shares a room. In his free time he destroys toy soldiers and tortures abandoned animals. Because of his violence, he also has problems at school.

Even if his psychopathic tendencies seem to diminish over time, he later finds pleasure in killing animals for no reason.

It is often used for Frank's plans, for example to get money or alcohol.

Liam Fergus Beircheart Gallagher

Liam is the youngest of the six children. He is mainly raised and cared for by his two sisters. Since he is only two years old, his character has not yet developed much; he is only beginning to articulate himself. He is particularly in contact with his father when he needs him to commit fraud. Since he is the only one of the children who is dark-skinned, it is initially assumed that he is not Frank's biological son.

Mickey Milkovich

He becomes Ian's friend in the first season, but sticks to his opinion that this is just a "fuck". In season three, he is beaten up by his anti-gay father for catching them both having sex. His father then gets the Russian prostitute Svetlana, who is supposed to "fuck the fagot out of him". You have to get married and have a baby, Yevgeny. He's coming out on season four , and he and Ian officially become a couple. In season five, they split up on the final episode because Ian thinks Mickey no longer loves him because of his bipolar disorder. In the 6th season Mickey has another comeback, but he is only seen in prison when Ian is "forced" to visit him by Svetlana. At the end of season 7, Mickey comes back to Ian by calling him anonymously and having him brought to him. Meanwhile, he is on the run and wants Ian to come to Mexico with him. Ian first decides against it, then for it, but leaves Mickey shortly before the border. Mickey crosses the border into Mexico without Ian. Season 8 is the only season without Mickey. In season 9, Ian is arrested and sent to jail. When he gets there, Mickey enters the cell. By betraying the cartel, he managed to choose where to lock him up. From then on, Ian and Mickey are officially a couple again. After a misunderstanding, Mickey & Ian want to get married, but when Ian backs away because he doesn't feel ready, the two break up. Since neither of the two can live without the other, they try to make each other jealous and fight over each other until they finally get married in the season finale of the tenth season.
