Hideo Hosono ( Japanese 細 野 秀雄 Hosono Hideo ; born September 7, 1953 in Kawagoe , Saitama Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese physicist and in 2008 co-discoverer of a new class of high-temperature superconductors , the ferrous high-temperature superconductors .

Life

Hosono received his Ph.D. in 1982. at Tokyo Metropolitan University . In the same year he became a research associate and 1990 associate professor at the Nagoya Institute of Technology. Later in 1993 he became an associate professor at Tōkyō Kōgyō Daigaku . In 1999 he became Professor in the Functional Ceramics Division at the Materials and Structures Laboratory (MSL). He was the head of the ERATO Hosono Transparent Electro-Active Materials Project and heads the COE Nanomaterial Frontier Cultivation for Industrial Collaboration project .

His research areas are inorganic materials science and wide-gap oxide semiconductors . He is a pioneer of thin film transistors with transparent, amorphous oxide semiconductors (TAOS, transparent amorphous oxide semiconductor).

In 2008, Hosono and colleagues discovered a completely new and unexpected class of high-temperature superconductors : a compound of iron, lanthanum, phosphorus and oxygen can be superconducting. The proportion of iron atoms was surprising, because every known superconducting material becomes normally conductive through sufficiently strong magnetic fields. They discovered the superconductivity of these ferrous substances back in 2006.

Hosono has published around 450 papers and holds around 70 patents. Since 2013 Thomson Reuters has counted him among the favorites for a Nobel Prize ( Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates ) due to the number of his citations .
