The Motorola Xoom is a tablet computer from the manufacturer Motorola , which was presented for the first time at the CES on January 5, 2011 and is in direct competition with the iPad . It was the world's first tablet computer with the new Android 3.0 operating system. In Germany, the “Xoom 3G” was initially available exclusively from Deutsche Telekom from April 30, 2011 . Since the 2nd quarter of 2011, the “Xoom Wifi” version has also been offered for sale in Germany.

technology

hardware

The Xoom has a 10.1 inch (25.65 cm) capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels . A dual-core system-on-a-chip of the type Nvidia Tegra 2 T20 with 1 GHz clock frequency is installed as the CPU , with 1 GB DDR2 main memory at its side. A flash memory with a capacity of 32 GB is used for permanent data storage . A built-in 5-megapixel digital camera records still images and videos, while another 2-megapixel digital camera records the user for video telephony applications. There is also a 3-axis acceleration sensor and a digital barometer .

software

Originally, the operating system was Android 3.0 "Honeycomb". An update to version 3.1, which was initially only available in the USA , was also released in Germany on August 26, 2011. From July 13, 2011, an update to Android 3.2 followed in the USA, which has also been available for German devices since December 2011.

At the beginning of 2012, Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" was released for the WiFi version of the tablet. In July 2012, Motorola announced an update for the 3G variant, which was mainly sold in Europe and which was distributed over the air shortly afterwards .

successor

The successors are the Motorola Xoom 2 and the Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition (ME), both of which run on the Android 3.2 "Honeycomb" operating system. An update to version 4 is to follow in the third quarter of 2012. The Xoom 2 was first launched in the USA and Great Britain and also in Germany at the end of January 2012. The Xoom 2 is technically very similar to its predecessor (see tablet market overview ), but optically stands out due to its characteristic graded corners. The Media Edition is 8.2 inches tall, only half as heavy as the Xoom 2 at approx. 300 grams and, according to the manufacturer, designed for playing media files.

marketing

A TV commercial is already running in the USA with allusions to the novel 1984 by George Orwell , who positions the Xoom as an alternative to the “mass product” Apple iPad . In reminiscence of Apple's well-known commercial "1984" by Ridley Scott for the market launch of the first Macintosh computer, it also contains, so to speak, a clear parody of Apple's advertising campaign at the time.

Another advertisement shows a multi - user , multi- touch user interface that relies heavily on rotating pie menus . However, this does not correspond to the actual interface of Android 3.2 "Honeycomb".
