Jessica Karen Szohr (born March 31, 1985 in Menomonee Falls , Wisconsin ) is an American actress . She became known to a larger audience through the lead role of Vanessa Abrams in the television series Gossip Girl .

Life

Szohr was born in the Milwaukee metropolitan area , the oldest of five children . She has Hungarian , African American , Irish and English roots. At the age of six she was used as a model in catalogs and advertising campaigns. As a teenager, she was active in soccer and cheerleading .

Szohr's first appearances as an actress included roles on What's Up, Dad? , Heavenly Joan or Hello Holly . In the series CSI: Miami , she appeared in three episodes as Samantha Barrish . She had her breakthrough with the series Gossip Girl , in which she played from 2007 to 2012. From 2008 to 2012, Szohr dated her fellow Gossip Girl actor , Ed Westwick .
