Already in the 18th and 19th centuries the hydronym Promyschlennaja was used, from the Russian obsolete promyschljat for business , here in relation to fishing.
In 1934 the railway line from the Ob station west of Novosibirsk on the Trans-Siberian Railway into the Kuzbass passed through the town. On October 16, 1936, it received the status of an urban-type settlement under its current name. As part of the industrialization of the Soviet Union, with one of its main areas in the nearby Kussbass, the old name was reinterpreted according to the meaning of the word promyschlennost in modern Russian - industry .
