Winter sports area Scheregesch

history

The place arose as a result of the discovery of the iron ore deposit Scheregeschewskoje in 1931. It and later the place was named after the discoverers, the Scheregeschew brothers.

After a delay caused by the Second World War , the construction of a mine and a workers' settlement began in 1949. The first ore was mined in 1952, and in 1956 the place was given the status of an urban-type settlement.

Culture and sights

In recent years Scheregesch has developed into a regionally important alpine ski center with around 30 hotels. The season lasts from November to May.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Scheregesch, iron ore mining - in open pit as well as underground - has been operated since 2004 by Evrazruda , which has been part of the Evraz Group since 2005 . The deposit's iron ore reserves - mainly in the form of magnetite , with an average iron content of 35% - amount to almost 200 million tons. Up to 3 million tons were extracted annually. The mines are located southeast of Scheregesch and Schalym, the ski areas on the northwestern side of the valley.

The settlement is the end point of an electrified railway line that branches off at the Kondoma station not far from the end point of the Novokuznetsk - Tashagol line. In addition to the Scheregesch terminus, there is another one in Schalym. In winter, the special train Simnjaja Skaska (winter fairy tale) for winter sports enthusiasts runs from Novosibirsk to Scheregesch, 600 kilometers away, on weekends .

Scheregesch is also connected to the road network in the direction of Taschtagol; from there a regional road leads along the railway line to Novokuznetsk and into the Kuznetsk Basin .
