Mezhduretschensk ( Russian Междуре́ченск ) is a city in Russia in the Kemerovo Oblast . It has 101,678 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
Mezhduretschensk is about 60 kilometers east of Novokuznetsk , the largest city in Kemerovo Oblast, and around 312 kilometers southeast of the regional capital, Kemerovo . The city is located between two rivers Tom and Usa. Hence the origin of the name Meshduretschensk, which translated means "between two rivers". Mezhduretschensk has a railway connection to the line between Novokuznetsk and Abakan .
history
General
Mezhduretschensk has existed as a city since June 23, 1955. It was founded on the site of the Olscheras settlement, which was built as a workers' settlement as part of the development of a coal mine in 1948. From 1948 to 1954, the Gulag special camp KamyshLag was in the vicinity of the city .
On March 23, 1994, an Aeroflot plane with 75 people on board crashed near the city .

economy
Today the city is one of the largest coal mining areas in Russia and is home to a total of four mines, including Raspadskaya , the largest coal mine in Russia. Two methane explosions occurred here in the early morning hours of May 9, 2010 (local time) , as a result of which at least 30 miners died. In addition to mining, which is decisive for the economic life of the city, there are now several processing plants for the extracted hard coal and two food production plants in Mezhduretschensk. The city is also a well-known winter sports area in the region: Here you will find the Jugus sports park with five ski slopes .
