Sergei Mikhailovich Kosminin

Sergei Michailowitsch Kosminin ( Russian Сергей Михайлович Космынин ; born May 26, 1964 in Mezhduretschensk ) is a former Soviet judoka who started for Russia in 1993 . He won three bronze medals at world championships and was twice European champion.

Athletic career

Kosminin usually competed in the weight class up to 65 kilograms. In 1983 he was second in the Junior World Championships and fifth in the Junior European Championships. In 1984 he won silver at the European Junior Championships. In 1986 he won the Spartakiade in Kiev and the World Student Championships in São Paulo. In February 1987 he won the Soviet championship. At the European Championships in Paris in 1987 , he defeated Janusz Pawłowski from Poland in the battle for a bronze medal . The following year at the European Championships in Pamplona , he again won a bronze medal. At the end of 1988 he won the World Student Championships in Tbilisi.

In 1989 Kosminin won his second Soviet championship. At the European Championships in Helsinki in 1989 he reached the final and received silver behind the Frenchman Bruno Carabetta . Five months later at the World Championships in Belgrade he was defeated in the semifinals by the Yugoslav Dragomir Bečanović , with a victory over Pavel Petřikov from Czechoslovakia Kosminin secured a bronze medal. At the end of 1990 Kosminin won the Jigoro Kano Cup in Tokyo. In 1991 he lost to the Georgian Guram Modebadse in the final of the Spartakiad . At the 1991 World Championships in Barcelona he defeated Jimmy Pedro from the United States in the quarterfinals and lost in the semifinals to the German Udo Quellmalz . With a victory over the Briton Ian Freeman Kosminin secured a bronze medal.

In 1992 there was no longer a Soviet team, but the United Team representing the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). In Barcelona at the 1992 Olympic Games Kosminin lost his opening match against Pavel Petřikov by a referee decision (yusei-gachi). At the end of 1992 Kosminin won his first Russian national championship. At the European Championships in Athens in 1993 , he defeated Udo Quellmalz in the quarter-finals and Fedor Lazarenko in the semifinals for Moldova . In the final, Kosminin met Latvian Vsevolods Zeļonijs and won his first European title. At the 1993 World Championships in Hamilton, Kosminin lost to the Swiss Eric Born in the semi-finals , and defeated the Belgian Philip Laats in the battle for bronze .

In 1994 Kosminin switched to the weight class up to 71 kilograms. At the European Championships in Gdansk , he defeated the Czech Josef Věnsek in the semifinals . In the final he defeated the French Patrick Rosso and won his second European title. At the end of 1994 he won again at the Russian national championships.
