European Judo Championships 1989

The European Judo Championships in 1989 took place in Helsinki from May 11th to 14th . Before that, the European Men's Championships in Helsinki in 1978 had already taken place, but in 1978 no Finn had won a medal. The five medals for the Finnish team in 1989 were the first in front of a home crowd.

Baschir Warajew in light middleweight, Fabien Canu in middleweight and Catherine Arnaud in lightweight won their third title in a row, Amiran Totikashvili in super light weight, Bruno Carabetta in light weight, Ingrid Berghmans in light heavyweight and Angelique Seriese in heavyweight were also able to successfully defend their title from the previous year.
