Bruno Carabetta

Bruno Carabetta (born July 27, 1966 in Mulhouse ) is a former French judoka . He was a third Olympic champion in 1988 and three-time European champion.

Athletic career

The 1.72 m tall Carabetta fought mostly in the half-light weight category until 1991, and was French champion in this weight class in 1988 and 1991.

In 1985 Carabetta was Junior European Champion. In 1986 he won the Junior World Championships in April and defended his European title in November. In 1988 he won the Tournoi de Paris in February . In May he won the final of the European Championships over the German Guido Schumacher . In September 1988 the Olympic Games took place in Seoul . After three wins, Carabetta was defeated in the quarterfinals against South Korean Lee Kyung-keun . Carabetta received a bronze medal after winning the round of hope over the Argentine Claudio Yafuso and the Hungarian Tamás Bujkó .

In May 1989 Carabetta won the final of the European Championships against Sergei Kosmynin from the Soviet Union. Five months later he lost in the semifinals of the World Championships in Belgrade against Udo Quellmalz from the GDR, in the battle for bronze Carabetta defeated the West German Stefan Buben . In 1990 he won his third gold medal at the European Championships by defeating Udo Quellmalz. After fifth places at the European Championships and the 1991 World Championships , Carabetta switched to lightweight. In this weight class, he won silver at the 1992 European Championships behind the Austrian Norbert Haimberger . At the Olympic Games in Barcelona Carabetta lost in his second fight against the German Stefan Dott . After three wins in the hopes he lost in the battle for the bronze medal against the South Korean Chung Hoon . After the 1992 season, Carabetta's international career ended.
