Jiří Sosna

Jiří Sosna (born January 19, 1960 in Vimperk ) is a former Czechoslovak judoka . He won a bronze light heavyweight medal at the 1991 World Championships.

Career

The 1.78 m tall Jiří Sosna fought until 1983 in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 86 kilograms, and then switched to the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 95 kilograms. From 1981 to 1983 he was middleweight champion of Czechoslovakia, from 1984 to 1988 and 1992 he won the light heavyweight division. In 1983 and 1988 he also won the open class.

Sosna was seventh at the 1982 European Championships . Two years later and one weight class higher, he finished fifth at the 1984 European Championships after losing to the Austrian Robert Köstenberger in the quarter-finals . At the 1985 World Championships in Seoul Sosna lost in the round of 16 of the light heavyweight division against Jerzy Kolanowski from Poland . In the open class he was defeated by the Egyptian Mohamed Ali Rashwan in the semi-finals and finished fifth. At the 1986 European Championships in Belgrade, he lost to Jerzy Kolanowski in the quarterfinals. With two wins in the round of hope he reached the battle for bronze against Koba Kurtanidze from the Soviet Union and won his first international medal. Two months later, Sosna won a bronze medal at the Goodwill Games in Moscow. At the European Championships in 1987 he was defeated in the quarterfinals against the Dutchman Hans Buiting and ultimately took fifth place. The following year Sosna reached the final of the European Championships in Pamplona in 1988 and won the title by beating Evgeny Pechurov in the final . At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 he defeated the Hungarian István Varga by Ippon after 3:06 minutes, in the quarter-finals he won against the French Stéphane Traineau by a judge's decision (Yusei-gachi). In the semifinals he was defeated by the later Olympic champion Aurélio Miguel from Brazil by a penalty (Chui) and in the battle for bronze he lost to the Briton Dennis Stewart with a coca rating.

At the European Championships in 1989 Sosna won the semi-finals against Jens Geisler from the GDR, the final he lost to Koba Kurtanidze. Five months later at the World Championships in Belgrade , Sosna defeated Belgian Robert Van de Walle in the quarterfinals , but lost in the semifinals to the Mongolian Odvogin Baljinnyam and was fifth after another defeat against the German Marc Meiling . In March 1991 he finished seventh at the European Championships in Prague. Four months later, at the 1991 World Championships in Barcelona, ​​Sosna lost to the Polish Paweł Nastula in the semifinals , and won the battle for bronze against the Brazilian Daniel Dell'Aquila . His last major international tournament was the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. In his second fight he was defeated by Aurélio Miguel by a penalty (Keikoku).
