Aurélio Miguel

Aurélio Fernández Miguel (born March 10, 1964 in São Paulo ) is a former Brazilian judoka . In 1988 he was the first Brazilian Olympic champion in judo.

Athletic career

The 1.80 m tall Aurélio Miguel competed in the light heavyweight division throughout his career, occasionally also starting in the open class. He first won the title at the Pan American Championships in 1982. In 1983 he was junior world champion. In the same year he reached the final of the Pan American Games , where he lost to the Cuban Isaac Azcuy . In 1984 Miguel became student world champion in the light heavyweight division and third in the open class. The following year he won silver in the light heavyweight division and bronze in the open class at the Universiade in Kobe.

In 1987 Miguel won the title at the Pan American Games by beating the Canadian Joe Meli in the final . At the Judo World Championships in 1987 he lost to the eventual world champion Hitoshi Sugai from Japan in the round of 16 . After two wins in the Hope Round, Miguel defeated the German Marc Meiling in the battle for bronze . In January 1988 he won the title at the Pan American Championships. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , he defeated two of his opponents by referee decision (yusei-Gachi) and two by punishing the opponent (chui) on the way to the final. In the final, he met Marc Meiling and won again after a warning from his opponent.

In 1992, after four years, Miguel won the title at the Pan American Championships again. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona he was defeated in the quarter-finals by the later Olympic champion Antal Kovács from Hungary, in the round of hope he lost to Dmitri Sergejew , who started for the United Team , and ultimately finished ninth. The following year at the World Championships in Hamilton , Miguel defeated Sergeyev, who was playing for Russia at that time, in the semifinals, and in the final he was defeated by the Hungarian Antal Kovács.

In July 1996, Miguel met the eventual Olympic champion Paweł Nastula from Poland in the semi-finals of the Olympic Games in Atlanta and lost due to a warning for passivity, in the battle for bronze he defeated the Dutchman Ben Sonnemans prematurely through Ippon. In the same year, Miguel won the title at the Pan American Championships. In August 1997 he won the South American Championships and the Pan American Championships within a week. Six weeks later he was defeated in the final of the World Championships in Paris to the Pole Paweł Nastula. In the open class he was defeated by Rafał Kubacki from Poland and Dennis van der Geest from the Netherlands and finished in seventh place.

In 1999 Aurélio Miguel's international career ended and he was later inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Judo Federation .

Political career

As early as 2002, Miguel, now also an entrepreneur, applied for the post of federal representative in his home state, but was unsuccessful. He moved from the PPS to the Partido Liberal (PL), an evangelically influenced party, and was successfully elected as a city councilor (vereador) of São Paulo in 2004 with 38,419 votes. Already at this point he had not fully complied with the disclosure requirement for disclosing assets, which later had legal consequences. He was re-elected for a second term in 2008 with 50,804 votes, this time for the PL's successor, the Partido da República (PR), a center-right party. In 2012 it was successful for the third time with 32,520 votes.

In June 2012, he was charged with bribery relating to permits to operate shopping centers. He was sentenced on February 5, 2013, including his city council seat and his assets being frozen.
