Schota Samsonowitsch Tschotschischwili ( Georgian შოთა ჩოჩიშვილი ; * July 10, 1950 in Ghvlevi , Inner Kartlien ; † August 27, 2009 in Gori , Inner Kartlien) was a Georgian judoka who competed for the Soviet Union. Until 1973 he competed in the light heavyweight (up to 93 kg), then in the heavyweight (over 93 kg), often he also started in the open class.

Life

At the 1972 Olympic Games , Chochishvili played seven light heavyweight bouts. He lost the quarter-finals to Britain's David Starbrook , who he met again in the final. Chochishvili won the final, making him the first Soviet judo Olympic champion.

In the final of the open class, Chochishvili was defeated at the European Championships in 1973 and 1974 against his Soviet compatriot Serhiy Novikow , in 1975 Chochishvili received silver in the open class behind Giwi Onashvili, who was also fighting for the Soviet Union . At the 1975 World Championships in Vienna, Chochishvili was defeated by the Japanese Haruki Uemura in the round of 16 in the Open Class and was awarded a bronze medal at the end.

At the 1976 Olympic Games he was defeated again in the open class against Uemura, who then also became Olympic champion, Tschotschischwili received the bronze medal as at the World Championships the year before. In 1977 Tschotschischwili received a bronze medal at the European championships in the open class at the end of his career.

In 1989, Shota Chochishvili competed in two mixed martial arts matches against Antonio Inoki, with Chochishvili winning the first and Inoki the second. Tschotschischwili worked as a judo trainer, he was later Vice-President of the Georgian Olympic Committee and the Georgian Judo Association. His son Ramas was successful as a judoka for Ukraine.

In 2003, Schota Tschotschischwili received a cancer diagnosis in connection with a heart operation. After years of chemotherapy, he died in 2009 at the age of 59.
