Haruki Uemura

Haruki Uemura ( Japanese 上 村 春樹 , Uemura Haruki ; born February 14, 1951 in Shimomashiki County , Kumamoto Prefecture ) is a former Japanese judoka . He was world champion and Olympic champion in the open class.

The 1.74 m tall Uemura defeated the two Germans Klaus Glahn (FRG) and Wolfgang Zuckschwerdt (GDR) in the open class at the 1973 World Championships in Lausanne . In the final he lost to his compatriot Kazuhiro Ninomiya . Two years later at the World Championships in Vienna in 1975 he defeated the Hungarian Imre Varga in the semifinals , in the final, like two years before, Uemura and Ninomiya met, this time Haruki Uemura won.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal Uemura won in the round of 16 against the North Korean Pak Jong-gil by a small score (koka). In the quarter-finals against Frenchman Jean-Luc Rougé , the Japanese won after 4:03 minutes. The semifinals against Schota Tschotschischwili from the Soviet Union continued for the full time of the fight, Uemura won by judge decision (yusei-gachi). Uemura ended the final against Briton Keith Remfry after 7:28 minutes through Ippon.
