biography

Zuckschwerdt came to judo at the age of 15. In this sport, he and his brother Detlev quickly achieved master or Dan grades and soon represented the GDR successfully at international tournaments. As a judoka of the SC Dynamo Hoppegarten he trained with Gert Schneider and won a total of seven GDR championship titles from 1969 to 1977. Then Zuckschwerdt was active as a judo trainer at SC Dynamo Hoppegarten and later also at PSG Dynamo Brandenburg Mitte .

Wolfgang Zuckschwerdt is a 7th Dan (Nanadan) in Judo and 5th Dan (Godan) in Sumo. He is the managing director of the German Sumo Federation , the German Sumo Association accredited by the European Federation Sumo .

Wolfgang Zuckschwerdt lives in Schenkenberg, Brandenburg (municipality of Groß Kreutz (Havel) ) and has been married to Sandra Köppen-Zuckschwerdt (* 1975) since 2006 . They are parents of their daughter Marie-Luis Zuckschwerdt (* 2005), who, like her parents, is a sumo athlete and took part in the sumo world championship for the first time in 2018; In 2019 she became two-time European champion (U 14) at the Sumo Cadet European Championship.

Zuckschwerdt was able to achieve the following successes as an active judoka of the German Judo Association at international tournaments for the GDR. At the Judo World Championships in 1973 , he and Klaus Glahn won the bronze medal. He also took third place at the European Judo Championships in 1973 in Madrid , 1974 in London and 1977 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . Zuckschwerdt won the bronze medals exclusively in the open class, as did his silver medal at the European Judo Championships for men in 1975 in Lyon .

Zuckschwerdt was part of the GDR's Olympic squad . However, he missed participation in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich due to a knee injury. Participation in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal was not possible because he narrowly missed a medal rank at a previously scheduled European championship and thus the qualification. Since he retired from active sport in 1978, he was not nominated for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow .

Activities after retiring from active sport

After the German reunification in 1990, Zuckschwerdt helped in a key position together with Henry Hempel and Hubert Sturm to transfer the judo sports structures of the GDR in Brandenburg to those of the Federal Republic. The co-founder of the Brandenburg Judo Association held the position of vice-president and consultant for women in judo on its board until January 15, 2006. After retiring from the board of directors, he was awarded the Bronze Merit Pin of the State Sports Association of Brandenburg for his commitment .

Currently acts Zuckschwerdt not only as a director of the German Sumo Association, but also as managing director of the Brandenburg SUMO Association in Landessportbund Brandenburg .

Zuckschwerdt is currently training children, young people and adult judoka and sumotori in the PSG Dynamo Center in Brandenburg in the PKJL department and organizes tournaments from regional to international competitions, such as the Sumo Cadet European Championship, which was awarded to Brandenburg an der Havel in October 2016.
