Anton Geesink

Antonius Johannes "Anton" Geesink (born April 6, 1934 in Utrecht ; † August 27, 2010 ibid) was a Dutch judoka and one of the few non-Japanese holders of the tenth dan . Geesink also worked briefly as a film actor and wrestler .

Career

The 1.98 m tall and 130 kg heavy Geesink was the first world champion in judo in 1961 who did not come from Japan . He aroused the particular resentment of the Japanese at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo , where judo was an Olympic sport for the first time when he won the gold medal in the open weight class against Akio Kaminaga . His other successes include world championship titles in 1961 and 1965 and 20 titles as European champions, in the open class in 1953, 1954, 1957 to 1960, 1962 to 1964 and 1967 and in the class over 93 kilograms in 1962, 1963 and 1964.

He also tried his hand at wrestling and was able to take sixth place in the weight class over 87 kg at the 1958 World Wrestling Championships in Greco-Roman style .

Since he left as an active athlete in 1967, Geesink ran several judo schools in the Netherlands and in 1987 became a member of the NOK in the Netherlands and the IOC .

Geesink lived in his hometown Utrecht, in the street named after him in the Ondiep district, until his death.

He received the Japanese Order of the Holy Treasure with Golden Rays (3rd or 4th grade).

Anton Geesink died on August 27, 2010 in his home town at the age of 76.

Anton Geesink also stood in front of the camera as an actor in the 1960s and 1970s, albeit only in two feature films and as an actor in a mini-series. His most famous role was that of the biblical judge Samson in the 1965 monumental film Gideon and Samson .

Wrestlers

In the early 1970s, Geesink also appeared as a wrestler after training by Dory Funk, Jr. In addition to appearances for All Japan Pro Wrestling , he also performed in his home country.
