Akio Kaminaga ( Japanese 神 永 昭夫 , Kaminaga, Akio ; born December 22, 1936 in Sendai ; † March 21, 1993 ) was a Japanese judoka . He won a silver medal each at the Olympic Games and at world championships.

Career

The 1.79 m tall Kaminaga won the silver medal behind his compatriot Kōji Sone at the World Judo Championships in Tokyo in 1958 . In 1959 he was defeated by Isao Inokuma in the final of the All-Japanese Championships in the open class. In the following two years he won the final against Inokuma. In 1964 he won for the third time and was selected for the Olympic Games.

The Olympic premiere of judo took place as part of the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo . From October 20th to October 23rd competitions were held in three weight classes and in the open class. On October 23, the fourth competition was the decision in the open class. In the preliminary round, Kaminaga defeated the Briton Alan Petherbridge and lost to the Dutchman Anton Geesink . The three winners of the preliminary round groups were in the semi-finals, plus the winner of the hope round. Kaminaga defeated Irishman John Ryan and Thomas Ong from the Philippines in the hope round . In the semifinals, Kaminaga won against the German Klaus Glahn . In the final he was defeated by Anton Geesink after a fighting time of 9:22 minutes.

In 1972 and 1992, Kaminaga was the coach of the Japanese Olympic team. In 1993 he died of cancer.
