Isao Inokuma
Isao Inokuma ( Japanese 猪 熊 功 , Inokuma, Isao ; born February 4, 1938 in Yokosuka , † September 28, 2001 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese judoka . He was the first heavyweight judo Olympic champion.
Career
The Olympic premiere of judo took place during the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo . From October 20th to October 23rd competitions were held in three weight classes and in the open class. On October 22nd, the third competition was the heavyweight division, the weight class over 80 kilograms. In the preliminary round, the 1.73 m tall Inokuma defeated the Malaysian Teck Bee Ang and the Argentine Miguel Angel Casella . Of the five winners of the preliminary round groups, two had to fight for qualification for the semi-finals. Inokuma defeated the South Korean Kim Yong-dal . In the semifinals he defeated Ansor Kiknadse from the Soviet Union and in the final he defeated the Canadian Douglas Rogers .
At the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro in 1965 , Inokuma defeated Ansor Kibrotsashvili from the Soviet Union in the final of the open class .
Inokuma was all-Japanese champion in the open class in 1959 and 1963, and in 1960 and 1961 he lost in the final to Akio Kaminaga .
