Career

Parisi was born in Italy, but emigrated to Great Britain with his family in the 1950s. Parisi began judo in the mid-1960s, winning his first national junior title in 1968. In 1970 he won the U17 European Championship. In 1971 he won the U20 European Junior Championship and with the British team he won the European Team Championship in the adult class. In 1972 he won the European light heavyweight title in the adult class. At the 1972 Olympic Games , Parisi competed in the open class and won his first three fights before losing to Frenchman Jean-Claude Brondani . Over the consolation round, Parisi fought his way through to one of the two bronze medals with a victory and a defeat, Brondani received the other. In 1973 Parisi won the U20 European Championship again, and at the European team championship he won bronze with his British athletes. This start was his last start in the British national team, because Parisi had met a French woman from Avignon , whom he married in August 1973. He applied for French citizenship, which he obtained in 1975.

Parisi moved to France, where he soon worked in the Ministry of Sports. In March 1977 he won his first French championship title. In May he won silver with the French team and gold in the open category at the European Championships. In 1978 he became vice European light heavyweight champion, but won the team title with the team. Also in 1979 and 1980 he received two medals at the European Championships. The 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow were boycotted by some countries , including missing the Japanese with Yasuhiro Yamashita , the reigning world heavyweight champion, and Sumio Endo , the world champion in the open class. In the heavyweight division, Parisi reached the final with three wins, where he beat the Bulgarian Dimitar Saprjanow by Ippon. Parisi also competed in the open class six days later, here too he reached the final with three wins, but lost there against Dietmar Lorenz from the GDR.

After a quieter year in 1981, Parisi won further medals at European championships from 1982, so he won with the team in 1982, and in 1983 and 1984 he won the open category. At the Olympic Games in 1984 Parisi was only in the heavyweight division, after three wins he was in the final, but lost there against the Japanese Hitoshi Saitō . Three months after the Olympic Games, Parisi won again with the French team at the European Team Championship. In January 1985, Parisi said goodbye to international competition with a third place at the judo tournament in Paris.
