Sergei Petrovich Novikov (Judoka)

Sergei Petrowitsch Novikow ( Russian Сергей Петрович Новиков ; born December 25, 1949 in Moscow ) is a former Soviet judoka . He competed in the heavyweight division and won an Olympic gold medal and three European championship titles.

Career

Sergei Novikov won his first international medal at the European Judo Championships in 1970 when he won the bronze medal in the open class. In 1972 he was able to repeat this success. In 1973 he won his first European title in the open class, in the same year he was also European champion with the Soviet team. At the Judo World Championships in 1973 in Lausanne, he won four of five heavyweight fights and was only subject to the Japanese Chōnosuke Takagi , by his victory over the Dutch Peter Adelaar Nowikow secured the bronze medal. In 1974 he defended his European title in the open class and with the team. In 1975 he won with the team, but lost the final in the heavyweight division against Djibilo Nischaradze, who was also playing for the Soviet Union . At the Judo World Championships in 1975 in Vienna, Nowikow also reached the heavyweight final and was defeated there against the Japanese Sumio Endo . At the European Championships in 1976 he won the heavyweight final against his Soviet compatriot Giwi Onashvili . In the Olympic judo tournament in Montreal in 1976 Nowikow won in the first round against world champion Sumio Endo and reached the final with three more wins against West German Günther Neureuther . The heavyweight final ended after 1:19 minutes with Novikov's Ippon victory.

At the European Championships in 1978 Nowikow lost the semi-finals against the Hungarian Imre Varga , but secured the bronze medal in the heavyweight division by defeating the Swede Ulf Ekberg . In 1979 Novikov won the heavyweight division of the Spartakiad in Moscow and took second place in the open class. In 1980 Nowikow entered the open class at the European Championships and won the bronze medal. Even with the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow Novikov entered in the open class. He lost the semi-finals against the French Angelo Parisi , in the battle for bronze Nowikow was defeated by the Hungarian András Ozsvár .

Novikov started in 1976 while studying sports for Dynamo Kiev and 1980 for Dynamo Moscow . He was the Soviet sambo champion in 1971 and 1972 and European sambo champion in 1972. From 1974 to 1979 Novikov was the Soviet heavyweight champion in judo, in 1977 also in the open class. After his career he worked as a trainer for judo and sambo.
