Dawit Khachaleishvili ( Georgian დავით ხახალეიშვილი ; born February 28, 1971 in Kutaisi , Imereti , Georgian SSR ; † January 11, 2021 ) was a Soviet judoka who competed for Georgia from 1993 . In the heavyweight division , he won an Olympic gold medal and three European championship titles.

Athletic career

Dawit Khachaleishvili won in 1988 and 1989 at the Junior European Championships. In 1989 he won with the Soviet Union team at the European Team Championships. At the European Championships in 1990 he won the bronze medal in the open class. The 1991 Judo World Championships took place in Barcelona, ​​Khachaleishvili reached the final in the open class and was defeated there against the Japanese Naoya Ogawa .

In 1992 there was no longer a Soviet team, but the United Team representing the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). In Barcelona at the 1992 Olympics Khachaleishvili played and won five fights. In the semifinals he overcame the Hungarian Imre Csösz , in the final he beat Naoya Ogawa through Ippon after one minute .

At the European Championships in Athens in 1993 Dawit Khachaleishvili competed for Georgia. In the heavyweight final he defeated the French David Douillet , he won his second gold medal by winning the final in the open class over the Belgian Harry Van Barneveld . He also competed twice at the World Championships in Hamilton . In the heavyweight final he lost to Douillet; in the semi-finals of the open class he was defeated by the German Henry Stöhr , but won the bronze fight against the Spaniard Ernesto Pérez .

In 1995 Dawit Chachaleishvili was defeated at the World Championships in Chiba in the first heavyweight fight against Naoya Ogawa, but then fought his way through the hope round to the bronze medal. At the European Championships in 1996, he defeated the Romanian Alexandru Lungu in the quarter-finals and Imre Csösz in the semifinals. He won the final against the Russian Sergei Kosorotow . At the 1996 Olympic Games , Khachaleishvili should face Alexandru Lungu in the first round. However, he did not find the right scale in time and was disqualified. At the end of 1996 he won the bronze medal with Georgia at the European Team Championships.

In addition to his judo career, Dawit Khachaleishvili was also successful in sambo and won the world heavyweight title in 1996 and 1997. He also played three mixed martial arts fights, one of which he won.

Khachaleishvili died in January 2021 at the age of 49 from complications from an enlarged cardiomyopathy .
