Satoshi Ishii ( Japanese 石井 慧 , Ishii, Satoshi ; born December 19, 1986 in Ibaraki , Osaka Prefecture ) is a former Japanese judoka and 2008 Olympic champion.

Career

The 1.80 m tall Satoshi Ishii started his career in light heavyweight, the class up to 100 kilograms. He won within five weeks in September and October 2004 in this weight class at the Japanese U20 championships, at the U20 Asian championships in Doha and at the U20 world championships in Budapest. At the end of 2004 he won the Korea Open. In February 2005 he finished third at the Super World Cup in Paris. A week later he reached the final of the World Cup in Budapest, where he was defeated by the Hungarian Dániel Hadfi . At the Japanese Championships in 2005 Ishii reached third place. At the end of the year he repeated his victory at the Korea Open. In February 2006, Ishii won the World Cup in Vienna. In April, he finished third in the light heavyweight division of the Japanese championships, but shortly thereafter won the title in the open class. At the Asian Games in 2006 in Doha, Ishii reached the final in the light heavyweight division, but was defeated there against the South Korean Jang Sung-ho .

In 2007 Ishii switched to the heavyweight division, the weight class over 100 kilograms. At the Japanese championships in 2007 in the open class, he lost in the final against Keiji Suzuki . At the Universiade in Bangkok , Ishii joined the Japanese team in the open class as a student at Kokushikan University and won the title. In November, Ishii started with the Japanese team at the World Team Championships in Beijing, the Japanese team won the title against the Brazilians. In 2008 Ishii won the heavyweight division at the World Cup in Vienna. At the Japanese championships he won the open class. In the summer of 2008 he competed in the heavyweight division at the Olympic Games in Beijing . He won his fights against the Italian Paolo Bianchessi , the Egyptian Islam El-Shehaby , the Russian Tamerlan Tmenow and the Georgian Lasha Gujejiani each through Ippon , with him in the fight for the final against the Georgian the decisive score one second before the end of the five minutes succeeded. The final against the Uzbek Abdullo Tangriyev lasted five minutes, Ishii won by a small score.

After his Olympic victory, Ishii switched to mixed martial arts fighters. Of his twenty-one fights so far (as of November 2016), he won fourteen, one fight ended in a draw.
