Harry Van Barneveld

Harry Van Barneveld (born February 18, 1967 in Amsterdam ) is a former Belgian judoka . He was Olympic Knight in 1996 and European Champion in 1997.

Athletic career

The 1.95 m tall Harry Van Barneveld competed in the heavyweight division or in the open class. In 1989 he was seventh at the European Championships . In the same year he won the heavyweight and open class titles at the World Military Championships. At the European Championships in 1990 he won two silver medals: in the heavyweight division behind Sergei Kossorotow from the Soviet Union, in the open class behind the Hungarian László Tolnai . In the same year he repeated his double success at the military world championships. In 1991 Van Barneveld was seventh in the heavyweight division at the European Championships . At the 1991 World Championships , he finished seventh in the heavyweight division and fifth in the open class. In 1992 he lost at the European Championships in the quarter-finals against Sergei Kosorotov, or against his compatriot Igor Bereznitsky . Van Barneveld reached the battle for bronze twice via the round of hope. In the heavyweight division he was defeated by the Dutchman Dennis Raven , in the open class he defeated his compatriot Hans Buiting . At the Olympic Games in Barcelona Van Barneveld won four heavyweight fights and lost to the Japanese Naoya Ogawa and the Hungarian Imre Csösz , in the end the Belgian was fifth. In November he won the open class at the Jigoro Kano Cup in Tokyo with a final victory over Ogawa.

In 1993 he reached the finals at the Tournoi de Paris and was defeated by the Japanese Koichiro Mitani . Van Barneveld also reached a final at the European Championships in 1993 , where he was defeated by the Georgian Dawit Chachaleishvili and received the silver medal in the open class. A year later he again won silver in the open class, this time behind French Laurent Crost . In 1995 Van Barneveld won bronze with a win over Crost. At the 1995 World Championships , he finished fifth in the open class. In 1996 he lost to the Estonian Indrek Pertelson at the European Championships in the open class , but won the bronze medal with a victory over the Georgian Alexander Davitashvili . At the Olympic Games in Atlanta Van Barneveld won his first fight against the Cuban Frank Moreno and was defeated in his second fight by the eventual Olympic champion David Douillet from France. In the hope round, Harry Van Barneveld defeated Luxembourg's Igor Muller , the Austrian Eric Krieger , the Greek Charalambos Papaioannou and the Chinese Liu Shenggang on his way to the bronze medal .

At the European Championships in 1997 in Ostend Van Barneveld lost to the Turkish Selim Tataroğlu in the heavyweight division and received bronze. In the open class he defeated Tataroğlu in the semifinals and then won the final against the German Volker Heyer . At the 1997 World Championships in Paris, Van Barneveld won bronze in the open class. In 1998 the Belgian finished seventh in the heavyweight division at the European Championships, and in the final of the open class he was defeated by Selim Tataroğlu. At the 1999 World Championships he lost to the Japanese Shinichi Shinohara in the semi-finals of the open class , but won the battle for bronze against the Brazilian Daniel Hernandes . At the end of his career, Van Barneveld finished ninth at the Olympic Games in Sydney after losing to David Douillet in the quarter-finals and to Selim Tataroglu in the hope round.

Harry Van Barneveld is a police officer in Belgium.
