European Judo Championships 1993
The 1993 European Judo Championships took place in Athens from May 1st to 2nd . It was the first and so far only European Judo Championships that took place in Greece. The host country did not win a medal, Evangelista Vassiliou took fifth place in the super lightweight and thus achieved the best placement.
Most of the successor states of the Soviet Union started in 1993 with their own team. Azerbaijan, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova, Russia and Belarus also won medals for the first time when they first participated.
Laetitia Meignan won the light heavyweight division for the third time in a row. Four other judoka were able to successfully defend their title: Nazim Hüseynov in the super lightweight, Pascal Tayot in the middleweight, Stéphane Traineau in the light heavyweight and Nicola Fairbrother in the lightweight.
