European Judo Championships 1998

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1998 European Judo Championships took place in Oviedo from May 14th to 17th . It was the first European Judo Championships in Spain since 1988 in Pamplona. The host country led the medal table and provided two title holders, the previous year Belgium as the host country had six title holders.

In 1998 the weight classes were changed compared to the previous year. While the upper limits in the super lightweight remained the same, the upper limit in the light heavyweight division was raised by five kilograms for men and six kilograms for women.

Ulla Werbrouck had recently won four light heavyweight titles in a row, after changing the weight classes, this time she won the middleweight division. However, Mark Huizinga won the middleweight division and Gella Vandecaveye won their third title in a row. Selim Tataroğlu had won the heavyweight division last year, and in 1998 he won the open class.
