Raquel Barrientos

Raquel Barrientos (born May 27, 1974 ) is a former Spanish judoka . She was World Cup runner-up in 1997 and European Championship runner-up in 1998, and she also won the European Championship bronze in 1994, 1995 and 1997.

Athletic career

Raquel Barrientos fought in the heavyweight division or in the open class. From 1993 to 1995, as well as 1997 and 1998, she was the Spanish heavyweight champion.

Barrientos began her international career in 1992 with a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships. In 1993 she took seventh place in the open class at the European Championships in Athens . In 1994 at the European Championships in Gdansk, she was defeated in the quarterfinals of the heavyweight division of the Polish Beata Maksymow . With two wins in the Hope Round she reached the battle for bronze and won against the Italian Donata Burgatta . At the European Championships in Birmingham in 1995, she was defeated in the quarter-finals of the open class of Bulgarian Tswetana Bojilowa . After two victories in the hope round, she defeated the German Sandra Köppen in the battle for bronze . At the 1995 World Championships in Chiba Barrientos lost their opening match against Donata Burgatta. The following year she was defeated at the European Championships in 1996 in the round of 16 of the heavyweight division of the Dutch Angelique Seriese and then retired in the hope round against the Hungarian Éva Gránitz .

In 1997 Barrientos competed in both weight classes at the European Championships in Ostend . In the round of 16 of the heavyweight division she was defeated by the Russian Irina Rodina . In the open class she was defeated by Belgian Brigitte Olivier in the quarterfinals . With two wins in the round of hope she reached the battle for bronze, which she won against the Romanian Simona Richter . At the 1997 World Championships in Paris Barrientos was eliminated in the heavyweight round of 16 against the Brazilian Edilena Andrade . In the open class she reached the final with a victory over the Dutchwoman Françoise Harteveld . After her loss to the Cuban Daima Beltrán , Barrientos received the silver medal. In 1998 Barrientos reached the heavyweight final at the European Championships in Oviedo with a semi-final victory over the Russian Swetlana Gundarenko . There she was defeated by the British Karina Bryant . In 1999 Barrientos took part again in the open class at the European Championships , but was eliminated against the German Katja Gerber in the quarter-finals and the Italian Clementina Papa in the hope round . At the Spanish Championships in 2000, she was defeated in the heavyweight finals Beatriz Martín , which then took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney for Spain .
