Simona Richter

Simona Marcela Richter (born March 27, 1972 in Reșița ) is a former Romanian judoka . She usually competed in the light heavyweight division (up to 72 kg, from 1998 up to 78 kg). She won an Olympic bronze medal.

Athletic career

In 1990 Richter was third at the European Junior Championships. In 1992 she reached the final of the open class at the European Championships in Paris, which she lost to Angelique Seriese from the Netherlands . At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, ​​she lost her first fight against the Dutch Irene de Kok , in the hope round she was eliminated against the French Laetitia Meignan .

In 1993 Richter won the first of their 14 national championship titles. At the European Championships in 1993 she finished fifth after she was defeated by Briton Kate Howey in the battle for bronze . In 1994 she placed seventh. In 1995 she finished fifth in the light heavyweight division, again losing the battle for bronze against Kate Howey. In the final of the open class she lost to Angelique Seriese as in 1992. In 1996 she won the bronze medal in the open class. At the Olympic Games in 1996 she was defeated by the Ukrainian Tetiana Beliaieva , in the hope round she was eliminated by the Italian Ylenia Scapin .

In 1997 Richter took fifth place at the European Championships both in the light heavyweight division and in the open class. At the World Championships in Paris, she reached seventh place in the light heavyweight division. 1999 Richter was fifth in the light heavyweight division at the European Championships. At the Summer Universiade 1999 she reached the finals and was defeated by the French Celine Lebrun . Also in 2000 Richter was fifth at the European Championships. At the Olympic Games in 2000, she lost her second fight to the Cuban Diadenis Luna . In the hope round she won against the American Amy Tong , the South Korean Lee So-yeon and the Belgian Heidi Rakels and received the bronze medal.

In 2002 Simona Richter ended her active career and became a judo trainer. She was the Romanian national coach for many years.
