Irene de Kok

Irene Margreta Maria de Kok (born August 29, 1965 in Eindhoven ) is a former Dutch judoka . She was world and European champion and won an Olympic bronze medal in 1992.

Athletic career

The 1.68 m tall Irene de Kok started in the middleweight division until 1984. In 1983 and 1984 she was Dutch champion in this weight class. At the European Championships in 1984 she won a bronze medal. Eight months later she reached the final at the World Championships in Vienna and received the silver medal after her defeat against Brigitte Deydier from France .

In 1985 Irene de Kok moved to the light heavyweight division. From 1986 to 1992 she won five Dutch championship titles in this weight class, and she also won three times in the open class. At the European Championships in 1986 , she won two titles. In the final of the light heavyweight division she defeated the German Barbara Claßen , in the open class she won the final against Roswitha Hartl from Austria. At the World Championships in Maastricht in the same year she defeated the Belgian Ingrid Berghmans in the light heavyweight final , in the open class she was defeated in the battle for bronze by the French Laetitia Meignan and took fifth place. 1987 de Kok won the final of the European light heavyweight championships against Berghmans, in the open class she received a bronze medal after her defeat against the German Regina Sigmund . At the 1987 World Championships in Essen, she again won the light heavyweight division against Berghmans. In the open class, she finished fifth after defeats against Chinese Gao Fenglian and German Karin Kutz . In 1987 Irene de Kok was Sportswoman of the Year in the Netherlands.

In 1991 Irene de Kok returned to the judo mat after a long break. At the European Championships in 1992 she lost to the French Meignan early on, but fought her way to the bronze medal. At the Olympic premiere of women's judo in Barcelona in 1992 , Irene de Kok defeated the French Meignan in her first fight, then the Romanian Simona Richter and the Belgian Ulla Werbrouck . In the semifinals, de Kok was defeated by the Japanese Yōko Tanabe , the fight for bronze against the German Regina Schüttenhelm won the Dutch woman after three minutes by Ippon. The last major success in Irene de Kok's career was a third place at the 1993 World Cup in Munich.
