World Judo Championships

The Judo World Championships are organized by the International Judo Federation (IJF). The Judo World Championships were held for the first time in 1956 in Tokyo with a competition in the open class. Other weight classes were introduced later. The women held their first Judo World Championships in 1980 in New York City . The championships have been held annually since 2009; there is no separate tournament in the years with the Summer Olympics .

Tong Wen was stripped of a 2009 gold medal for doping in 2010, which she was awarded again a year later.
