Kim Mi-jung (maiden name Bae Mi-jung ; born March 29, 1971 in Masan ) is a former South Korean judoka . In 1992 she was the first Olympic champion in the light heavyweight division, the class up to 72 kilograms.

Career

Kim Mi-jung took part in the international tournament in Paris in February 1988 and finished fifth. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, judo competitions for women were offered as part of the demonstration competitions. Kim took part under the name Bae Mi-Jung, she won in the first round against the Australian Wendy Callander and in the semifinals against the German Barbara Claßen . In the final, she was defeated by Belgian Ingrid Berghmans .

Two years later, Kim Mi-Jung took part in the Asian Games in Beijing in 1990 and received a bronze medal. In February 1991 Kim won her first World Cup tournament in Munich. In July 1991 she won the 1991 World Judo Championships in Barcelona by beating the Japanese Yōko Tanabe in the final . In February of the 1992 Olympic year, she won the World Cup tournaments in Paris and Munich. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, ​​judo competitions for women were part of the Olympic program for the first time. It took Kim fifteen seconds for her first two competitions together. In the quarter-finals against Katarzyna Juszczak from Poland , it took two and a half minutes to reach the Ippon . After another victory by Ippon in the semifinals against the British Josie Horton , Kim met in the final as in the previous year in the same place on Yoko Tanabe. Kim won the gold medal by referee decision (yusei-gachi).

At the Judo World Championships in 1993 in Hamilton, Canada, Kim received a bronze medal. Two months later she reached the final of the Asian Championships in Macau, but lost to the Chinese Zhao Limin . In February 1994 Kim took part in three World Cup tournaments in Europe, after a second place in Paris she won in Leonding and was third in Munich. In the summer of 1994 she was defeated in the final of the Goodwill Games against the Belgian Ulla Werbrouck . Kim's last major tournament was the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, she won the title by beating Chinese Leng Chunhui in the final .

Kim started her entire career in the light heavyweight division up to 72 kilograms.
